Emphysema is a chronic incurable lung illness that is commonly found in older smokers. If he was a smoker and still smokes then he needs to stop immediately. If he works around fumes, chemicals or smoke he needs to reassess his job. He needs to protect his remaining lung function or he could soon be on oxygen to breathe. If, as I imagine, you mean emphysema, then yes it is bad. Check your word first before panicking.
