It can be...it just depends on where you live and which restaurants you patronize, I suppose.
After getting strange looks from the waitress at a particular chain (I won't mention the place), I found my dish to be quite satisfying after asking her to hold the chicken and double the veggies.
As a matter of fact, I went to a place once where there was not one item on the menu that could be easily modified for one who doesn't eat meat. I pulled the waiter aside and explained my situation. He said that he would talk to the chef to see what he could do. As everyone else's food came out, so did mine and it was delish! The chef got really creative and whipped up this great dish with pasta and vegetables. It was really light and really colorful. The entire table wanted to try my dish b/c it looked and smelled so good. I think the chef liked the chance to cook outside his box that day...you never know! Just ask. :-)
I've had nothing but luck!

it can be difficult to find something to eat at a chain restaurant, so my family and i will always go to a vegan (or vegan-friendly) restaurant to eat. i am fortunate to live in the southern cali area where there are a few vegan restaurants (granted i have to drive a little out of the way to get there, but it's worth it) in the surrounding vicinity.
if dining out with family, i will visit the restaurant's website beforehand to see what vegan options they have.
**to valbee: i love herbivore restaurant! have you tried their chocolate cake? dee-lish!!**

I live in San Francisco- so I'm lucky- there are a lot of vegan/vegetarian restaurants here and most restaurants offer special menus and alternatives for vegan/vegetarians.

i wouldn't know cause i'm not a vegan, but i'm pretty sure it is. i can only imagine how hard it is to get something to eat that doesn't have meat in it or any by products of any animal. plus, i'd hate to be a vegan and eat at a restaurant and have everyone munch on piece of cow right infront of me.
but i think they're vegan restaurants out there, i just wouldn't know of any. just search for some.

No. Most restaraunts in my area have vegetarian meals on their menus, and most cities are beginning to adopt the same on theirs as the vegan community grows. Even if they don't have any vegetarian meals, pretty much any restaraunt will work with you and whip something up in the kitchen that will satisfy you even though it's not on the menu.

I look for places that have veggie options and avoid those that don't. Simple as that. I vote with my feet.
I'm also lucky I live in a metro area that has many veg-friendly options and a handful of vegetarian restaurants easily accessible by public transit.

Oh yes it is! Just yesterday we went to a restaurant and they did not have ANYTHING vegetarian... It can be frustrating at times... But usually just a salad and some veggies will do.

Chinese restaurants are usually a good choice, because they do not use dairy.
Be careful of Thai and Japanese. They tend to use fish products in their seasonings.
