Once a hen's egg production declines, she will either be slaughtered for low-grade chicken meat products or disposed of like the male chicks that are suffocated in plastic bags, tossed into dumpsters to die, crushed to death, or bulldozed into the ground alive. Laying hens are considered "spent" after two years, and are commonly slaughtered for potpies, baby food, other ground-up chicken products, or animal food. Egg-laying hens are among the most abused animals of them all.

Chickens raised for meat are a different strain than egg hens.
"Meat" chickens are selectively bred to put on a lot of weight quickly so they can be killed & packaged.
"Egg" chickens *are* used for food after they stop producing but usually end up as soup, nuggets etc. A hen living under natural, healthy conditions will keep laying eggs for several years, but hens in "egg factories" usually don't see their 2nd birthday. Most male "egg" chick are killed immediately after sexing, often by being tossed into a garbage heap to suffocate.

No they are not used as table birds ( for meat )
chickens used for eggs are hybrids between Roade Island Reds and Sussex birds. This gives the robustness of the RHR and the egg laying consistancy of the Sussex
They are not big enough for meat birds.
They are used for eggs for about 9 months before being killed and turned into dog meat or fed back to chickens.
chickens have all the egg starting cells in them at birth so have a fixed number of eggs to lay. For hybrids, this tails off after a year so they are disposed of before this time.
A chickens normal natural life span is more than 5 years.
So if you eat eggs from any commercial farm ( free range, organic, battery etc ) you are responsible for the death of 20% of thier stock each year.

Yes, when they aren't producing eggs anymore, they are killed. The meat is used for stuff like chicken noodle soup and other products like that.

Yes, when they get old and stop laying they are ground up into nuggets. Chickens generally lay well for 2-4 years depending on the care they receive.

The chickens that lay eggs are crammed into little 1ft by 1ft cages with other chickens, and their eggs are collected, then once they don't lay, they are sold for meat, that yes, humans eat. As long as the chicken, cow, pig, anything, is barely breathing whether it's covered in sores, missing limbs, so on, it is slaughtered, skinned, and packaged. Gruesome, huh? That's why I don't eat them.

Hens are usually only allowed to live for 2 years then their production rate starts to go down and they rent considered good "money makers" anymore and are usually slaughtered. =( if they were allowed to live their whole lives they would probably live about 15 years

yes they are killed. in grocery stores you see the "fryer" chickens and the "roaster" chickens. the fryers are egg-layers who are past their prime for laying eggs. Roasters are raised for their meat, so they tend to be more tender, meaty, and juicy. as for how long their lives are, i don't know. probably only a few years.
