Most people CAN get rid of the virus. Their bodies can basically "fight off the virus".
However, there is no "cure" for HPV. When most people think of a cure they think of drugs, therapy, or other remedies to get rid of the virus. Since there are no drugs to get rid of the virus there is technically no "cure".
Since it is a virus though, some people will ALWAYS have it. Their bodies are unable to get rid of the virus. There are NO cures for viruses (herpes, HPV, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, measles, small pox, etc.)
Also, there is no test for men to detect whether or not they have HPV, or whether or not their bodies have been able to "fight it off". It's pretty much impossible for a man to know if he has the virus, unless he develops warts himself. And, not everyone with HPV develops genital warts. This is why the virus is SO common. Most people are unaware they have HPV and end up spreading it around unknowingly.

Yes, your doctor is right. Unlike other viral infections like HSV (herpes), most forms of HPV will work themselves out of your system in a couple years. Until then, get regular exams because you could be at an increased risk for cervical cancer. Also, you should probably know that, while condoms can reduce the risk of passing the virus to others, it won't reduce it very much due to the fact that the "infected area" (where the virus is shed) could be very large indeed (and include areas you might not normally consider to be "genital" exactly). So really, protected sex is safer, but not by much. Be safe, and good luck.

A virus has to run its coarse but you have a higher chance of getting cancer if you contract hpv. Just keep up with your pap smears!!

the SYMPTOMS can go away, but the virus will always be in your body. it can lie dormant, and in doing so the bad cells that show on a pap will not be present, however it is still in your body, much like the HIV and Herpes virus. once you have hpv, you always have it...continue to use protection and it is very important to keep your scheduled paps!

Yes, it can. When diagnosed, unless it has already gone into cancer, give your body a little time to heal and also go get a 2nd opinion. Family planning loves scaring patients into immediate colposcopies and cryosurgeries because it means more money for their privately contracted doctors. However if you go elsewhere, especially Women's Health Centers, they take a more wait and see approach to it.

Yes, you can clear it out of your body but it's always there. Viruses never go away but they can be held in check by the immune system.
