A normal blood pressure is 120/80 or lower. High blood pressure is 140/90 or higher. If your blood pressure is between 120/80 and 140/90, you have something called "prehypertension."

Treatment begins with changes you can make to your lifestyle to help lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease. If these changes don't work, you may also need to take medicine.

Even if you must take medicine, making some changes in your lifestyle can help reduce the amount of medicine you must take.

Lifestyle changes

- Don't smoke cigarettes or use any tobacco product.
- Lose weight if you're overweight.
- Exercise regularly.
- Eat a healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables and is low in fat.
- Limit your sodium, alcohol and caffeine intake.
- Try relaxation techniques or biofeedback.

I think with the above changes in your lifestyle the High BP can be reduced considerably and you are requeired to moniter the BP at regular intervals and see your Physician.

If the above ways do not bring the pressure down, then get on some meds. Normal pressure is being lowered over the last years. It used to be your age plus 100. It has been lowered to 140/90 to now 120/80 or less. It is an insidious risk factor. We do not have a clue as to what the pressure is unless we take ti with a BP cuff. The drug companies now have produced a fantastic array of BP meds that are amazing. Also, get your cholesterol below even 125. To counteract all the good food in the US, try all the standard cholesterol lowering methods, which probably will not work. In which case, take cholesterol lowering meds- statin + zetia. Mine runs 106-125mg. Blood test.

Blood pressure measurements don't count for anything if you've been walking around. Ideally, you should be sitting down for at least 5 minutes or so. Blood pressure also can vary during the day, so it's best to get measurements from similar times during the day. No caffeine in the morning either. These measurements should be repeated on a few separate occasions. Some people get "white coat hypertension" when they go to the doctor's office because they are nervous. Probably blood pressure medicines wouldn't kill you. But you don't necessarily need blood pressure medicines if your blood pressure is only high while active. When doctors study the effects of high blood pressure, they study the effects of people who are diagnosed with it as described above. You are probably at no higher cardiac risk from your blood pressure.

Lower salt intake and weight loss are keys. If these do not work then it is time for medication. But give everything else a try first.
