Paul, I guess it's your turn to ask the weekly "why should I" question?
Right now you have a "right" but if everyone exercises that "right" that could change. Utility companies have only so many tools at their disposal to provide the required energy. If demand exceed availability things get very interesting, and other, more conservative users will have to suffer along with energy hogs like you.
A lot of utility companies calculate average use and charge you extra above the base amount. So in that sense those of us who conserve are rewarded with modest utility bills. You and the energy hogs pay to support your habits. As long as you'd rather pay out for a higher electric bill than a concert, or dinner out, or all the other very enjoyable ways one might spend the money saved through conservation, well, I guess that's your right, too.
Bon appetit.

#1. You should not worry.
#2. Global warming is a FACT; it isn't something that will happen overnight, because it has already happened.
#3. That is the definition of selfishness.
#4. Go read the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Nothing is said about electricity; you do NOT have the RIGHT to use electricity.

Hey John Doe, I guess the videos of the Larssen Ice Shelf disintigrating and the polar bears swimming for miles without finding ice are fakes, huh? I guess the fact that Canada, Norway, and the US are fighting over the islands being exposed in the new 'Northwest Passage' caused by melting is all lies, right? I guess the last 3 summers (including this one, BTW) have really not set records for the hottest years ever- it's a hoax perpetuated by NASA. GET A LIFE! Climate change is real and denial solves nothing! Shut up and get on board or start swimming with the poor drowning bears...

You are one of the few people in Yahoo anwers who seems to use common sense. Althouh most educated people now realize that GLOBAL WARMING IS A HOAX created by greed politicians to further their political careers and corporations to make a quick buck. THIS is FACT and NOT MY OPINION What is know about global warming is this:
1. The money spent on this hoax costs the lives of 2,000 people daily mostly in third word countries and mostly children. The people spreading this hoax do not care because they profit from this. Maybe Al Gore III's children
(who will not have a rich father) will suffer from this poverty caused by money wasted on this nonsense. I bet this will be one invention that junior will regret.
2. THE ice cap on both poles (North and South has increased 98% over the least several years.
3. Most scientists not paid by global warming promoters are predicting a cooling trend on Earth starting around 2010.
4. The average temperature on Mars has increased faster
then that of Earth over the last three decades. Maybe we need to get the Martians to use public transportation
Please live your life to help others and not listen to the latest fad created by greed and the uneducated. Falling for global warming hoax will hurt most everyone but the greedy people mentioned above. Thank you for using the brain God gave you.
To the poster who mentioned the fact that your electric company charges more per watt used for heavy users, You know why this is so? It is because the gov't allows these companies a monopoly. If they had to compete in a free market they would never get away with this nonsense. How long would Home Depot stay in business if they advertised on tv Please limit you purchases in our stores to $100.00 and if for some reason your purchase is over $100.00 we will charge you a $25.00 surcharge for every $100.00 thereafter. You guessed it they would be filling for bankuptcy.

I guess you do not remember the power outages, because the system could not handle the demand for power, and the people who died. Electricity is man-made only so much can be produced at a time.
Global Warming is happening now-the ozone layer, unseasonable weather, ice caps melting.
Everyone else has mentioned the other reasons why to conserve.

1. You have no rights to electricity. You buy it, it is a product; if I choose not to sell you electricity or decide to raise my prices I am not infringing on your rights. Feel free to buy as much electricity as you like, I have lots of energy sector investments.
2. Global Warming has already happened. When your trailer blows away I wish I could be there to see if the look on your face is denial or bewilderment.

Some of us want our grandchildren to have grandchildren if they wanna. Some of us care more about *that* than we care about 'gotta have the car and gotta have the deck and gotta have the...'
Mind you - I'm betting you use a laptop an ipod, some kind of teeny-wheelie thingie, and a mobile - so, dude, *what* electricity? If you choose the right brand - and you do, don't you? you're probably using less electricity in a week than mister/mamselle baby-boomer full-wall TV mini-cocktail-bar hairdryer trouser-press curling-tong gas-guzzler (okay - that's oil, not electricity - same diff, dude) uses in half an hour.
See? Sleek, cool, eco-friendly - easy. Why are you being so defensive about it?

Because waste is waste. If you don't care about global warming, there are plenty of other reasons to limit the amount of resources that you do use. No one is telling you to stop using it, but why waste it?
You have to pay for the electricity that you use. Essentially you are paying for the enjoyment that electronic items bring to your life. But if you're not enjoying them, why pay for them. Ex: When you're not in a room, you are not being comforted by th illumination that a light bulb provides. So why throw money away by lighting unoccupied rooms?
