If you own a cat or dog I am hoping that you feed your animals the foods that they are supposed to eat. It is one thing for a human to decide not to eat but a whole other story to make your dog or cat follow suit. You can actually be causing more harm then good.
If for some reason you consider the idea of not feeding your pet meat (it doesn't have to be store bought canned food or dry food, you can make your own) then by all means contact your Vet first. Make sure to keep all appointments with your Vet and if you see any negative side effects from the lack of meat then either give the animal away if you can't force to look at "dead animal food" or feed it a diet of meat and other foods that your Vet will recommend. Your animal can not make the same choices you do.
I am a vegetarian but in no way would I ever consider feeding it just vegetables. I realize a cat's body is different then mine and while I can survive as a vegetarian, my cat will not fair as well. There is such a thing as taking it a bit too far..

I don't have pets. I hate most animals. I might get a giant dog. I'll feed it whatever makes it healthiest. I think they have some with white meat and fish.
I'm a health food vegan, not an ethical vegan.

As a vegan pet owner, I've had to make a compromise. I know what is in pet food, but I also know that dogs and cats are carnivores. I believe it would be cruel for me to force them to eat a vegan diet. Therefore, I feed them the best quality food I can (Canidae and Felidae), and I eat a vegan diet myself. I'm sure there are plenty of vegans who would disagree with me, but I don't believe that it is possible to be totally pro-livestock and pro-pet. I love my pets, and want to treat them as best as they deserve.

I have a cat, which is a carnivorous creature, and there is no way around feeding her meat without undermining her health. Because of that I've been trying to find the best cat food brands that practice the most humane methods of dispatching animals for food. It's a necessary evil if you own a cat. I've been told that Natural Balance (a cruelty-free company) is a good one for cats, but I've had little luck finding it in my city, so I tend to stick to the more expensive brands until I can get it or order it.

Cats are carnivores. I feed my elderly cat high-quality canned food (Weruva) and prescription dry.
I can forgo meat and be healthy; my cat cannot.

Cats and dogs can be healthy on well-planned vegetarian diets, see http://www.helpinganimals.com/animalsHome_gi_vegAnimals.asp
It's especially easy with dogs since they're omnivores. My roommate has two very healthy vegetarian dogs who eat Evolution Diet food.
