It's because it's not easy to eat out in HK as most of the restaurants serve only meat eaters, and very few of them offer choice for vegetarian.

It absolutely appalls me that a cook cant provide a few vegetarian and vegan meals on the menue. What is the matter with mushroom pasta, chickpea curry, vegetable burgers, zucchini slice, vegetable rissotto, vegetarian fried rice, bean chilli, vegetarian shepherds pie or veggie lassagne or lentil soup?

Why is there is a meal that a vegetarian can eat its rattoulie or tomatoe pasta. The vegetarian and vegan diet is getting more popular but I am lucky if there is 1 choice. The mushroom pasta has bacon or chicken, the rissoto has chicken, the fried rice bacon, the bean chilli meat , the lentil soup has bacon in it or made with meat stock etc. Its awful. Yes I think that eating houses lose business if they cant cook a few vegetarian and vegan meals. I went to a pasta restraunt and everything had a meat product in it even the lentil soup and cream of cauliflower had bacon in it!! Terrible. Also why should vegetarians and vegans be discriminated against? Also I agree with the other posting about vegan restraunts being pricey - yes there are restraunts that are vegan but they are trendy little places where its very expensive. You can go to a Harre Krishna restruant but even they are pricey unless they are food kitchens then there are all sorts there.

Clevis D has made an excellent point - restraunts are there to make money - and vegetarians and vegans have money to spend and the major big income of a restraunt is BOOZE so a person who has eaten their meal and is happy is probably more like to spend money on cocktails and BOOZE than someone who cant find anything substantial to eat other than lettuce and will leave!! Excellent point Clevis D

I'll admit it is hard sometimes when you find yourself out at a restaurant with friends or family that you did not select to find vegetarian selections on the menu. However I believe that a restaurant is a private business and should be able to reserve the right to serve and offer an menu of their choosing. I think that since a lot more of society is vegetarian/vegan it is not a sound business decision for any restaurant not to offer a menu that also includes several vegetarian/vegan choices. I would like to think that it is still the business owners right to offer whatever they decide to offer and not be regulated to make sure they offer a specific menu item. If the restaurant doesn't offer what you want then go somewhere they do.

No, do you believe that vegetarian restaurants should offer at least a meal with meat?

It is the decision of the restaurant owner.

If you don't like the menu in a restaurant nobody is making you go.

Why somebody is always trying to impose their opinions or preferences to the rest of the people? Live and let live.

Hi Nightingale,
I am unsure as to HK estabishments, as being an omnivore I sort of expect some meat content in a meal
However, I belong to a club where it is part of my duty to arrange the caterers, so I always make sure that vegetarian dishes are available to all. And fine they are.
My concern is not so much with restaurants and take-aways, but private gatherings, where folks should have a choice.
Oh, I will head for the hog-roast, but I do not expect all to follow me.
Nor do I expect others to see me "enjoying" a carrot cake or nut roast.
Each to their own, and fair play.
We are however designed to eat and digest meat, so surely that is more natural ?
I have yet to meet a Veggie that does not like the smell of fried bacon.

Hey Ho,
Bob with a sausage sarny.

Here in Italy vegetarians can do very well, since a lot of Italian food is vegetarian.
In general, if restaurants want the business, they should offer at least 3 vegetarian options I would have thought. Even carnivores don't want to eat meat all the time!

You cater for your market. Like it or not Vegans and Vegetarians make up a small percentage of the population and as such a tiny percentage of the clientele, Whats the point in having dishes on the menu that you might only sell one or two of in the course of the day? You have to buy the ingredients and spend time preparing them and then when next to no-body buys the meal you have to throw the stock away. Its not a predjudice its merely business sense.
I know very few people will like my answer and Im expecting a good few thumbs down, but the truth is often inconvenient.

Yes and No. It would be nice if they had one or two dishes available in order to cater to most tastes, but as most are independant then they are under no law to do so.

I am sure most vegetarian restaurants would be horrified if they were asked to include meat dishes. But in the same way ones that clearly are for meat eaters such as say steak houses shouldn't be forced to offer alternatives either.

Personally I would like to see more available. Though i am not vegetarian I am not that keen on meat either. But usually vegetarian meals are lentil or mushroom based and I'm not too keen on either.

Well I don't think they should. Same for a vegan restaurant, they shouldn't have to offer food to accomodate an omnivore. It would make things nice and easy though, but it's all a restaurants choice. Most of them do now offer vegetarian, sometimes even vegan, friendly choices even if it's just one item on the menu.

Well they should do if they have any sense.... so many vegetarians now they would be making a poor business decision not to put a good variety on the menu. Another bug barer of mine is the price some restaurants charge for vegetarian meals.... usually the same price as a meat dish! Huge rip off!

If the staff at a restaurant can handle it I think it would be ok to add a veggie menu other than a side salad. Some places offer salad bars and some will make a nice vegetable stir fry if asked. I personally am omnivorous so I eat everything I want to eat anyway, but ask and at most places you shall recieve.
