Use a larger hard kids swimming pool since it is bigger than a sandbox and fill it with sand. Get the sand wet like at the beach but not soaking and then make sand castles or figurings of something and have a neighbor judge them. Put numbers on them rather than names so that even the child giving the party can be a part of it. The person that does the judging cannot be there during the creations. Have plastic cups or cans or anything or any took that the kids can use to help them make their castles or figurines. If you have a swing set in your back yard, have the kids swing and jump out of the swing and judge their distance. To keep them from swinging too high, they only can give themselves 5 pumps from a standing still position before they jump. If you have a tree you can also make a swing in the tree for that too. Play volley ball over a rope or volley ball net but use a good sized balloon filled with water. Be sure that you have several on hand in case one gets popped. Have a watermelon eating contest with a seed free watermelon, that way kids don't have to worry about the seeds and choaking on them. Another game for the sand that they could do after they create their figurines is to dig for shells. You can get whole packages of different sized shells from craft stores and walmart too. Bury them in the sand and have them on a time limit to find the most. Have several larger ones that earn extra points or a special prize. Do that after the sand building so that the shells do not interfere with their projects. Those are all things you usually do and see at the beach.

Go with an Hawaiian or Caribbean theme. Either one would be easy to pull off. Get a bit more creative with a Survivor or Flight 29 Down party.
