My husband and I (both vegetarian) are about to have our first child and want our family to be brought up in a vegetarian home. Are there any vegetarian familes that could share their experiences (good and bad) or recommend any resources you've found useful. Specifically were there any health concerns you've faced related to vegetarian children? The research I've read has mainly been positive, but I'm looking for first hand experiences. Thanks!

Congradulations on the baby!!
I was a veggetarian for 16 years and did 2 pregnancies and raised my daughter for 7years as a veg and our son for 2...We occasionally eat fish and chicken now (3 times a month) mostly as an expierment and my husband is a serious athlete and his body fat was getting dangerously low there weren't enough beans in the world...
SO it is definately doable and I agree refined soy is a dangerous thing, hard to digest and way too modified some of it seems to border into the twinkie realm..
I love whole foods, we were ovo-lacto vegs. My kids were HUGE HEALTHY babies, breastfed for a long time, always tall strong and healthy.
I made many legume dishes with really diverse veggies whole grains, millet, quinoa and buckwheat are high in protien so they are a good way to increase the intake, using lots of herbs, lemon and amino acids for a salty kick.
There are tons of amazing veg cookbooks out there. I personally am a huge fan of Angelica's Kitchen cookbook (an amazing vegan cookbook http://www.angelicakitchen.com/ ).
BTW my kids have a really great attitude about food, they love things like sauteed chard and kale and sushi with tempeh.
Good luck :-)
Enjoy the baby!!

I think the website is www.vegfamily.com. And Dreena Burton's "Vive Le Vegan" has a section that gives you advice on raising vegan children.

The best thing you can do is limit the amount of soy products you feed your child.

Stick with soy that is as unprocessed as possible and don't eat all that junk soy food (deli slices and cheese, crumbles, soy milk, etc.)

I have no first hand experience but I think what you are doing is amazing and your child will be grateful later in life for the lifestyle you have brought them into!! Good Luck!
