Mostly it depends more on the foreign students' personality. American students are typically very friendly, curious, want to get to know you, etc. In my high school, the foreign exchange students we had each year were nearly treated like royalty. If you're a friendly sort (and the Aussies I've known have all been pretty friendly sorts - closer to Americans than Canadians, Brits, etc), you should do pretty well.

Is there "American" food? I suppose if you are thinking of something that they couldn't or wouldn't get in France I would go the regional route. Food from Louisiana is popular now. Jumbalaya or Gumbo. I don't like either of them, but many do. Or soul food. Fried chicken, baked mac n cheese, & greens. A New England clam bake might be good. Another choice might be a good crusty on the outside, chewey on the inside bagel with lox and red onion. How about a BLT.

Cornbread.
Baked Squash.
Turkey.
Sweetpotato casserole with marshmallow topping.
Cranberry sauce.
Pumpkin or Pecan pie
basically, the whole thanksgiving dinner list (all super-american, and some of it quite exotic to Europeans, especially the cranberries & pecans).
Or, you could just have:
Hamburgers or Sloppy Joes
Potato Salad
Pinto Beans
Vanilla Ice Cream and Apple Pie
For snacks, don't forget popcorn--it's very American.

Some regional specialty for your area - like southern Fried chicken, or pulled pork, or ribs, or something that's outstanding in your hometown! (For example, the area in NY that I'm from is known for apples - so I'd serve a homemade apple pie.)

Ask your guest what he or she would like to try. France has lots of foreign foods, there may be a preference; a curiosity... and don't try to take them to a "French" restaurant, it could be embarrassing.
