my partner is, and we went to a veggie/vegan show last week and I picked up a leaflet about milk and how it has puss cells in it. What's that about? Gross! I have been on soya milk since but dont like the taste. I read that a certain amount of puss cells are legally allowed . Does anyone know more? I am in England by the way.

What is the FDA? Almond milk sounds nice but I havn't seen it in the shops. I will look for it. I dont have a problem with soy milk on cereal but in tea and coffee. Also with the fact it seems we are the only animals that drink another animal's milk so I was told, which made me think.

Beebs, thank you SO much for condescending to correct my spelling, and there is no way anyone in their right mind should drink raw milk. Do you not have T.B. in your world?

Sorry I don't know about England...
I live in the US
I can give you a USDA somatic cell count for 2006 (for US though)
If you are interested.

Not that it would be of any use to you in England... sorry... But it does make for interesting reading...LOL

Edit: Organic is only "supposed" to mean that the cows that made the milk weren't given hormones and all that good stuff... Who knows though...
The milk(even if it is organic) would still contain pus.(i think)
Soy is great... but this is coming from someone who never liked cows milk... so I kinda automatically took to soy. :]

Edit: FDA (Food and Drug Administration)

Yes, it's true that puss is found in milk and other animal based foods including human breast milk. While small amounts will most likely not harm you there is never any way of knowing exactly how much is in the milk. In meats the bacteria found in puss is cooked and if cooked to a certain temperature is not likely to cause any harm. However milk curddles at high temperatures and creates bacteria that are harmful. My best advice is to stick with the soy. Have you tried the vanilla flavor? I though it tasted more like a milkshake but for some it's an acquired taste. You might also try rice milk or almond milk.

Have some … pus with your cookies? If you down a glass of cow’s milk, you will. It may be white, but researchers say that every cupful contains somatic cells, i.e., pus.

The dairy industry knows that there is a problem with pus in milk. Accordingly, it has developed a system known as the “somatic cell count” to measure the amount of pus in milk. The somatic cell count is the standard used to gauge milk quality. The higher the somatic cell count, the more pus in the milk.

Any milk with a somatic cell count of higher than 200 million per liter should not enter the human food supply, according to the dairy industry. Therefore, anyone living in a state where the somatic cell count is higher than 200 million shouldn’t be drinking milk. There’s only one problem—every state but Hawaii is producing milk with pus levels so high that it shouldn’t enter the human food supply! Even the national average, at 322 million, is well above the industry’s limit.

There are certain gross things allowed in the production of all food.

If you really want to cut out the milk(elimination is healthy anyway) you may want to try rice milk or almond milk of you don't like soy. Even try another brand of soy milk, they don't all taste the same. There are certain brands of soy/rice/almond milk that I cannot stand, and others I like.

I prefer rice milk over soy, the taste is not as strong, and its not as thick. RiceDream is my preferred brand.

First, I think you mean PUS cells. Yes, a certain amount are allowed in commercial milk. Commercial milk is nasty anyway, as it contains steroids, growth hormones, antibiotics, and in most cases, traces of blood (one reason commercial chocolate milk was created was to hide blood tinged milk) Commercial dairy cows are artificially inseminated repeatedly to keep them producing milk, and overmilking contributes to wounded udders, causing there to be blood and pus in the milk. Try finding an organic dairy where you can purchase raw milk, from well cared for cows. I am fortunate enough to have my own lovely cow, who produces milk for her calf, but has plenty left over for us. When she is without a calf, we do without milk. I churn her lovely cream into butter and make fresh cheeses from the milk. What a gift. I wouldnt consume commercial dairy, though, if it was the only thing going! Have you tried rice or almond milk? They are better than soy, in my opinion, but the raw, organic whole milk is the way to go. It might take you some research to find a source, but its well worth the effort.

"I will never enjoy my cereal again, thanks"
Sure you can. There's Rice milk, Soy milk, Vanilla rice milk, ect. How about apple juice. I eat cereal strait - crunchier.

I didn't bother finding about about pus. By then, I already removed milk from my diet. I'ts been 12 years.

"Everything they say is good for us one day they say is bad for us the next"
Nope. "They" aren't the ones to listen to. They can't knock natural things: Fruits and veggies, grain, seeds.....
The way to look at it is: "if it's un-natural, it's probably un-healthy. Cooked cows milk is un-natural for adult humans.

Well, there are many different kinds of "milk" and most soy milk tastes different between brands. There's also almond, rice, hemp, etc... kinds too.

Well, there's a small amount of something gross in most things we eat, to be honest. For example, if you have meat, there is a certain percentage allowed for other things that drop in. It's just a fact of processed life, I suppose. I wouldn't go veggie over it, though, because there's a small amount of pesticide and things like that on vegetables as well.
