I had gestational diabetes for the last 3 months of my pregnancy. I controlled it very well with diet alone and my son was born 2 weeks ago with no complications. I have been checking my blood sugar a few times a day and I have had some high readings when I eat a lot of carbs. Does anyone know if it takes a few weeks for your pancreas to recover from gestational diabetes or does this mean I have the real thing? I am quite distressed about this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would go carb-less for awhile. I had gestational diabetes in 1992 and developed Type 2 diabetes in 2000. I feel if I would have been more careful with what I ate I might have been able to keep it away. I do well now but-----if I only knew then what I know now. Good Luck to you.

If you are overweight and overeat, your diabetes canc continue- It's critical that you start eating better , exercising, and drinking more water now. Even if you don't want to. usually 2-6 wks postnatally the fasting blood sugar is measured and reading could be normal or high (meaning DM)
The fact is that 25%-30% of GDM will go on to develop overt diabetes within 5 years
in ur situation ur daily measure of random blood sugar is not sensitive u need to do the fasting and u should give a venos sample not a finger prick to diagnose DM
in ur case it is unlikly that u have DM bcz in ur pregnancy you were controled by diet alone
