It's interesting you ask this in the vegetarian section. They all have their own ideas, but I was in 4-H, and have seen how it's done. Pigs are first shocked into unconciousness and then shot or killed other ways, chickens either their neck is broken, or head chopped off. Cows are probably killed like the pigs. It's painless to console you, but still sounds barbaric.

My hubby is a meat cutter/butcher. He's worked in slaughter houses and worked on mobile butcher trucks...I"ve assisted when he would butcher cows and goats, chickens and rabbits. The chickens and rabbits get a quick beheading. Larger animals are most often shot. I think if more people realized where their food came from they'd be less wasteful and more respectful of food instead of eating a few bites and throwing things away or letting them rot and throw them away instead of feeding the poor. The Indians ate meat and honored the animals they used. We as a society need to be better stewards.

just look around peta.org, and you will find alot of stuff. These animals DID NOT live long peaceful lives in the pasture, the WERE NOT killed humanely, infact, most have never seen the light of day or been outdoors until the drive to the slaughterhouse. just check it out.

If you *really* want to know, go to the PETA website. There are videos called "Meet Your Meat". They take you through the slaughtering process of cows, pigs and chickens. It's not for the faint of heart and viewer discretion is advised.
It made me cry......

I think the best resource will be PETA "Meet your Meat". There you'll be able to see the cruel reality... Very very sad... it made me cry too... But this videos also made me realize that what I was eating was nothing but trash and it also helped me very very much with my decision and in no time I became a vegetarian and now I am a vegan.
