Wilfred Brimley is funny when he says it. It's just cuz people are ignorant, and someone said it wrong to them once and it stuck. I've heard that from practically everyone, including family members who know I have diabetes

It's because once someone hears it said that way from another ignorant person, the pronounciation just catches on. It's the same reason why people say "nuke-you-lur" not "nu-clear" when trying to say nuclear.
