It depends on where you are. If you are in Japan, then try everything. Like other countries' foods, some will be to your liking, and some won't.
If you are outside Japan, then don't let your first try at some Japanese food make you think that all Japanese food is going to be made the same way. For example, in my town, in the USA, there is a Japanese restaurant owned by Chinese-Americans. The food they prepare is pretty mediocre, in my opinion, but that's because I've lived in Japan for 4 years. My friends here, however, think the food is great. That's because they don't know any better. I like Japanese food made at restaurants in other towns better.
Even in Japan, I have found different people prepare food differently, and my reaction is the same.
So, take the other guy's advice, and try everything, at least twice.
Something simple, I would recommend you try is edamame. Boil the beans in very salty water for a couple of minutes. Then pour out the water and chill the beans. They're good cold. Then have a good Japanese beer; Sapporo or Kirin are to my liking. Be sure to pop the beans out of the husk before you eat them. The first time I had edamame, I stupidly put the whole thing in my mouth. I got a surprise and lots of laughs.
Have fun exploring Japanese food.

All of it is good. If you've never had it before, some foods are less exotic than sushi. Try tempura. It's batter-fried food like mushrooms, carrot, and peppers. Or there is shabu shabu, which is meat stewed at the table with vegetabels and noodle. Niku Jaga is stew and simple chicken terriyaki are both delicious.

Okonomiyaki which is a mix between pizza and pancake. Various ingredients such as seafood, vegetables and meat can be mixed with the dough and placed on the okonomiyaki as topping.
