Not to mention 70 percent of soy beans and grain grown in the U.S. is fed to animals--meat eaters kill even MORE plants than veg*ans do.
Anyone who can't tell the difference between a carrot and a cow needs remedial biology.

This is how I'd respond:
Oh god...if I hadn't already heard this stupid question a million times. For one thing, how many vegans have ever gone up to you and say they're better? I've never gone up to an omnivore to say I'm better than them. I'd make an exception for you though since you're question makes me think you're pretty stupid. Why don't you go kill a dog and compare that to picking a tomatoe off the vine? So far, I haven't heard any tomatoes cry out in pain then cower away in fear.
Oh, and by the way, you don't always have to kill a plant to eat it, not that it makes any difference.

okay here's my usual response
1. everything needs to eat something. If you don't want to, fine. I'll come to your funeral
2. As humans with higher resoning skills, we have a choice in what to eat.
A. Animals, which have a centeral nervous system and brain and therefore can feel pain, emotion, fear, loss, etc (this can all be proven)
B. A plant, which has no central nervous system or brain and therefore cannot feel pain, emotion, fear, loss, etc.
3. For me the choice is clear
4. I do not think I am "Better" than anyone else. I am just trying to live the healthiest and most compassionat lifestyle for ME.

Plants are designed to be eaten. The propogation of their species depends on it. Fruits and vegetables are meant by Nature to be eaten so their seeds can be spread. They taste and smell good because they try to attract animals so that the animals will eat them. It's the natural order of things.
Then they'll probably say, "Well, animals taste good so Nature must have meant for us to eat them, too."
To which you can tell them, No one gets sick from eating fruits and vegetables (unless they're allergic or something), but meat is full of cholesterol which can cause heart disease that kills a third of the people in the U.S. and is the #1 killer of women. Why would Nature mean for us to eat animals if they cause deadly diseases, plus you can't even eat it raw without getting sick or go biting through animal hide and muscle with those puny teeth we have. Face it. We are not meant to eat animals. We ARE meant to eat plants. It's all just simple logic.

LAUGH! Do it with a smile!!! When they say something stupid, just laugh. Don't do it at them, or even in their general direction. Completely ignore them with your body language but make sure they are aware that you think what they are saying is funny. If they insist on saying things as retarded as this, LAUGH! =)
I don't know what is wrong with them, but if you act like a happy person that is confident in her choices, they will probably not get their childish kicks out of opening their ignorant mouths. Their lack of respect is FUNNY. How can someone be so dumb and rude? It's HILARIOUS. =)
YOU ARE RIGHT AND THEY ARE WRONG. Not because they eat meat, but because they can't let you be different and make your own choices even though you are making a choice of compassion and wisdom. Keep your chin up and keep your face bright and smiling and they can't touch you.
PLANTS DO NOT HAVE NERVOUS SYSTEMS. They don't need to feel pain, they can't AVOID things that would cause pain so what good would it do them. They are IMMOBILE!!!!!!! They are just complex chemical reactions that have the ability to reproduce. Anyone stupid enough to compare them to animals is admitting that they know eating animals is wrong and they are just trying to justify their own eating habits.

well... for starters, plants cant feel things like animals do. they arent conscious of whats going on and they arent butchered in an insanely inhumane way. I have been asked the same question many times and people always say its just a phase and that I dont care about animals that im just saying it to get attention. I dont know why people arent confident enough with themselves to leave other people alone.

well theres no way around it since humans cant photosynthesize, and creat our own food we have to get nutrients from other organisms , and its just the way humans thing if it doesnt move it cant feal, even though studies have been done on plants that show they can react(wiht a pulselike thing or something) but also its less like slaughter, especialy if you get organics, where they arnte covered in pesticides.
but yes your right anyway you look at it humans are forced to kill in some way to survive
man thats a difficult argument to make when you know you have to survive of of them

yes, plants are living things, but God put plants on this earth for us to eat, not animals. it says so in Genesis. also, meat nowadays is contaminated and i hate the fact that those people torture those poor animals so that we can eat. it's crazy. this is what made me become a vegetarian: http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/video.asp?video=meet_your_meat&Player=wm
animals have feelings and personalities. eating a pig is like eating a child. pigs are proved to be smarter than the average 3 y/o.

Plants don't have emotions. They lack fear and they lack the ability to bond with their offspring like living, breathing creatures with a brain. They are not locked up unable to roam freely. They don't have instincts to protect their young. They can't feel anger or love. Animals that are sent to market are no different than a beloved cat or dog. If you would not eat your cat or dog, why on earth would you eat a pig or lamb?

My opinion is that while plants are alive they are not living beings, that is, they aren't conscious and don't think. Our bodies are designed to eat plants and not meat.
