We do this every summer! Here are my must-haves:

1. Lots of good BBQ meats: 20lbs of pork spare ribs, 10lbs of chicken breast, 10lbs of ground beef for home made burgers
2. A good potato salad or a veggie platter
3. Lots of drinks (beer, wine, iced tea, soda)
4. Various desserts: brownies, cookies, cupcakes
5. Fruits

If you email me, I'd be happy to share my recipe with you.

a caterer! No, seriously, I'm doing the same thing in October for a housewarming and plan on BBQing hot dogs and hamburgers, making a ton of potato salad, a big ol' fruit salad, my special recipe baked beans and chips and dips plus plenty of beer, soda and water. Simple and all can be done ahead except for the actual BBQing.

Gotta Have...
Great Food
Great Drinks
Great Music
Great Mix of People
Great Host

Make sure you have a good mix of food, soda, alcohol (if desired), juice, ice, and coolers or buckets to keep the drinks cold. Make sure you have a great mix of music playing, but not so loudly that people can't converse. Have plenty of cups, plates, dinnerware, and napkins on hand. Be a great host and mingle, introduce people and make everyone feel comfortable. It is not a bad thing to be short on seating - it keeps people up and moving. Have fun and relax!
