If you are referring to what is also know as a "Pot Luck" then salads and desserts are always popular. I also like to take a crockpot full of coctail sausages (like Li'l Smokies) covered in BBQ sauce.

Are you going to be the host or a guest? If you are the guest, check with the host to make sure she doesn't have 5 sides, 8 desserts .If you are the host, you should make the main course and give suggestions to your guests what you would appreciate them bringing. Let's say you are planning the party to have an Italian theme. You make the pasta with a selection of sauces, Ask someone to bring a large salad, another could bring some crusty Italian bread, another could bring an appetizer, another would bring some Italian dessert.. Anyone with no kitchen talent at all, could bring several bottles of wine. It is always better if you have a basic theme for the dinner, so the pitch-ins aren't all over the place, making an odd dinner.

A platter with small pieces of cheese, nice crackers and some fruit is always easy and good. If a hot meal is needed, do a vegetable--- green beans, corn on cobb, carrots in brown sugar. Hope that helps.

If you don't cook go to costco and pic up a lasagna or one of their veggie platters, those always go over well.
