It seems so depressing. I know they say there is viral shedding,My dr says she wont prescribe valtrex cause i only have a few mild outbreaks, not worth the money or side effects.I can only find scary hopeless sites on herpes and dating. Shouldnt it be safe,,if there are no sores present and have little to no outbreaks, even with condems it still seems possible to pass it,Or is the drugs companys trying to scare people into buying their drugs.? So is general basic skin to skin contact ok?

I'm not sure if you are talking about cold sores (oral herpes) or genital herpes.

Cold sores can be passed by kissing someone, sharing a drink with someone, sharing chap stick, lip stick, cigarettes, etc. Basically anything a person with cold sores has their lips on and then someone immediately uses it after them can spread the virus. Cold sores can also be spread by oral sex which could cause a person to develop genital herpes.

Genital herpes can be spread by sex (vaginal, oral and anal) and by DIRECT skin to skin contact with the infected area. Even if a person is NOT on an outbreak it is STILL possible to spread the virus (that's how I contracted it).

Anti viral medications are not necessary. They are great for people who experience a lot of outbreaks, but a person with genital herpes does not NEED to take them. I have personally had genital herpes for 6+ years. My last outbreak was over 2 years ago and that's without taking medication.

The medication only HELPS prevent outbreaks, HELPS prevent the spread of genital herpes and HELPS heal the outbreaks. Taking antiviral medication for genital herpes is not a 100% guarantee their partner will not contract the virus. It is STILL possible to spread the virus even if a person is on daily suppressive therapy for herpes.

Good luck!

It is still possible to pass on the herpes virus even if you are not having an outbreak, unfortunately (even with a condom). I'm not so sure that you shouldn't talk to another MD regarding getting a prescription for valtrex, it has been shown to reduce (but not completely stop) transmission of the virus to your partner. Having said that, it is expensive and the side effects can be pretty bad, so it would be up to you to decide. Basic skin to skin contact will be OK, but with intercourse you can spread the virus.

Well it depends on where your outbreaks are around your mouth no kissing around your private area no it would be best to wait to it clears up and then go from ther and if you do , do that you could risk spreading it to your partner
