I recently had to take a physical and was told I could not eat for at least 6 hours before they did my bloodwork. I ended up missing lunch, and didn't eat for about 10 hours. When the nurse started my bloodwork, she couldn't get a vein. I passed out 3 times and when she took my blood pressure when I finally came to, it was 60 over 40.

How close to fatal is that?

God is very Gracious and Merciful, He called off the angel of death, so thank HIM, might be HE wants to take good work from you.
Remember to drink milk with a little sugar when going for physical, because the blood sugar level falls down, and a fatal outcome is there. Dates if included are extra supplements.
You have excellent cardiac reserve that's why you didn't faint.
Best of Luck wise guy.

If your BP (blood pressure) stayed there for a prolonged time, it would become detrimental- humans normally need a mean (average) BP of 50 to keep the brain and kidneys working. If you passed out your brain was not getting the oxygen it needs to function fully. That is a bit strange to see after 10 hours of fasting- it may also have been partially due to a vaso-vagal response- which is also called 'fainting'. You may need to drink more water on a regular basis as well.

The ideal blood pressure is 110/80. I do not believe this is what caused you to pass out. Not eating caused your blood glucose level to drop. As far as not be able to get a vein - that also had nothing to do with you blood pressure.

It's quite common, and not fatal. The posh name for it is "syncope", and is well-described on pp's 322/323 of "Introduction to Cardiovascular Physiology" by Prof. J.R. Levick, 4th Edition.
It frequently happens to youngsters at the sight (or even thought) of blood, which well illustrates your case.

Well worth reading, - I can reccommend it even to your other answerers.
