i was a pescetarian for a while, who also indulged in ice cream. since then i gave up fish, milk, and anything else animal related. i don't wear leather or wool. i guess that would make me vegan... BUT i don't check the ingredients of over-the-counter pain killers or fortified juices. so can i call myself vegan or would that make me vegetarian? i could look it up myself, but i'm curious to see what you all have to say.

about the fortified juice: there are some apple juices which fortify using nutrients gained from animals. i'm not sure which ones, but i'm attending a peta party on wednesday and i'll find out.

I would check the ingredients in OTC medicines to ensure there is no gelatin. Liquigels and gelcaps are frequently made with gelatin, so you want to avoid those. I try to avoid conventional medicine also, but I will take it when nothing else works on my headache. But I look for formulas that don't have lactose (in some pills, especially homeopathic remedies) and gelatin.
You sound like an imperfect vegan. Aren't we all? But do be more cautious about reading labels.

Technically, a true vegetarian abstains from meat. Lacto vegetarians can eat and drink milk and milk products, ovo-vegetarians can eat eggs and egg products, and lacto-ovo vegetarians can eat both.
Vegans don't use animal products for anything. This includes abstaining from meat, milk, eggs, leather, wool, gelatin, feather boas, etc.
I'm not sure what would be in fortified juice to make you not vegan, but I do know that there could be animal-derived ingredients in medicines. I'd say that you've gone far enough to call yourself a vegan. If anyone was to get more picky, that'd just be silly.

I think it will depend on who you talk to. You are correct in calling yourself a vegan since you gave up ALL animal by-products.... but if you are not looking at OTC medications and such then there is a chance you are ingesting animal by-products. Although I think its a very slim chance as most medications are not derived from animals since so many people are vegitarians and even non-vegitarians would perfer their medication not come from animals. So I think it just depends on the crowd you keep on what you call yourself. If you go organic and vegan this might clear it up... as I do not believe organic juices use animal by-products.... but then again I am not sure! Best of luck!!!

You are vegetarian. Vegans do not take any over the counter medication. They contain gelatin (substance created by being boiled with ligaments and bone marrow of animals) as well as animal fats.
The juices should be fine. Though some do contain harmful, unhealthy ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup, they typically contain no animal products.

no, sorry, that would make you neither.
vegetarians do not eat gelatine (etc) which is often in pain killers
and veggies need to exclude all slaughter by-products, this means checking ingredients. if you don't its just guesswork and you could not call yourself a veggie nor vegan
but don't worry about a label, if you are happy with your choice then stick with it and just drop the V&V words

If you don't consciously have anything to do with animal products (milk, leather) then I would consider you a vegan.
