Nowadays, non-veg foods like meat, beef, chicken and so on are becoming really controversial. There is bird flu, mad cow and other diseases propagating. So there is nothing more nutritious and healthy other than what Mother Nature can offer you. Try to make your parents understand this and slow and steady you'll win the race. Vegetarians tend to lack some nutrients in their foods like vitamin B12, Calcium, Iron and vitamin D or sometimes protein. So make sure to eat B12 fortified cereals, non-fat dairy products, Iron fortified foods along with vitamin C, which helps iron-absorption and get plenty of morning sunlight for your D or drink D fortified milk. I think there'll be no problem to be veg. I am since nearly 16 years and I am still living healthily. For your protein you just need to vary your dishes: legumes, dry beans and peas, lentils, soy, tofu, nuts and seeds, whole grains, etc. These are easily served sometimes without cooking like almonds for instance and are very tasty too. You'll be bored to eat meat and fish everyday but you will always have a large variety to choose from pure vegetarian dishes. So go for it and live long.

NO! You should not!

You should know why some people really forced others to become vegetarians and not eating meat.

It is mith or religion behind it.
They are worshippinig what they believe.
I am sorry to say this, this is true.
Cow is sacred to some people.
Some people believe they can reincarnate to animals.
They dont dare to say it in open so they introduce vegetarians instead.
They have lots of excuses but the real and core reason is : Cow is sacred.

Eating meat is OK. Desease in vegs and animals are just the same. birds flu or mouth desease had been taken care.

Have you heard lately about a cow with TB which might not be killed ? To kill a TB cow has to be decided by court? .
It's happened in Europe somewhere or Briton , I forget.

It's up to you.
Iam sure your parents will not harm you.
If you believe that you can reincarnate becoming cow, then I am not stopping you to become vegetarian.

Hello! I was in the exact same predicament about 8 months ago. My parents just could not see why anyone wouldnt eat meat. Talk about frustrating! One way to persuade them is to research it heavily. A healthy vegetarian diet that allows you to recieve all of your nutrients without meat has been proved to be heathier than eating the meat itself. Critics of vegetarians will say that meat has important nutrients that the human body cannot survive without-- this is true. BUT HOWEVER, you can obtain these nutrients from a variety of sources, without ever compromising your health. In order to convience your parents, you also might consider creating a sort of chart on what you will eat everyday, underlining how you are going to recieve the protien, fiber, vitamen B12, and omega fats that you are lacking without meat.

About what you need to eat-- okay, to simplify things, I'll just use the list of healthy choices for each meal I used in another blog:

Breakfast: Try the "Lean One" cereal with high protien and high fiber (it will say on the box which variety it is) or maybe a bowl of oatmeal (theres this really addictive banana bread one from quaker)

Lunch/Dinner: Try tofu, soy, and lentil products, until youve found the one right for you. I actually prefer veggie burgers (go heavy on the toppings) with whole wheat/grain buns. There are also vegetarian soups in the soups aisle (make sure you check the label--- some say that they are vegetable soups but really include beef/chicken stock). For dinner especially, sometimes I heat up a "Lean Cuisine" box (yay- no preservatives!) that doesnt have meat in the ingredients list (such as the fetticini alfredo and the cheese lasgna). Lastly, stews are really quick and easy to make: just boil some water, dump in all sorts of vegetables and spices, and voila!!

Snacks: I cannot stress enough the importance of eating fruits and vegetables. Aim for at least 4 fruits/veggies a day NOT including those in main meals. Try a banana for brunch, an apple during lunch, an orange for a snack, and some strawberries with dessert. Mix them up too, make sure you get a variety. An easy way to get all of these at once is to put them in a blender with some crushed ice and soy/skim milk to make a yummy smoothie : ). If you're worried about not getting enough protien and fiber, take either a TLC bar or a FiBar. Both are really good-- especially the peanut butter version of FiBar. Lastly, don't forget that fruits and vegetables can come in other ways then just plain from the supermarket. Try some frozen fruit bars (found in the ice cream isle), applesauce snacks, fruit and soy yogurt, etc. etc. etc.......

My parents are still very apposed to my choice of lifestyle, but because they love me, they know it is not their decision to make. Also, if your friends can't deal with the fact that you want to stand up for what you think is ethical, then I guess they might not be the best friends after all (I know, this is an awful thing to have to say). It took a lot of courage to tell my friends, but I did it very abruptly (and that helped a lot), saying that it was my new year resolution to become a vegetarian. Good luck!!

You should become a vegetarian if that's what you want to do. Try to convince your parents that there are supplements you can take to make up the lack of nutrients from meat. Being a vegetarian can be healthy as long as you have a balanced diet. You can still have protien in your diet by having eggs, nuts, soy, peanut butter, and beans.

ima vegetarian and im happier and heathier and a lil skinier make sure you get enough proten in your diet like nuts tofu rice black beans and avacodos & vitamins, but i her eating to much soy produsct is bad for sperm count when eaten in high doses becuse of the plant estrogin. look into it

and and!

vegetarians have a very health life style ,Plant foods improve human health, while animal 'foods' degrade it. The most comprehensive study to date regarding the relationship between diet and human health found that the consumption of animal-derived ‘food’ products was linked with "diseases of affluence" such as heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and cancer. T. Colin Campbell's landmark research in The China Project found a pure vegetarian (i.e. vegan) diet to be healthiest. Dr. Campbell estimates that "80 to 90% of all cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and other degenerative illness can be prevented, at least until very old age - simply by adopting a plant-based diet."

Check out www.vrg.org for all sorts of nutritional information that will allay your parents' fears.

Then go to www.cok.net to learn about how animals raised for food are treated.

A veg*an diet can be healthier--if you eat the right foods, as in lots of fruits, veggies, grains, and beans, and a moderate amount of nuts. That's what you eat, what I listed above.
