It is unnatural to milk a cow. A cow produces milk for a calf and a calf alone. It is not meant for humans to drink cow's milk. Saying it is okay to own a cow for milk is like saying it is okay to own a slave. It is wrong, no matter how you try to look at it.
There is one poster on here in particular who mistreats her cow by forcing it to give milk and then she tries to justify it by saying "If we dont milk her, she becomes swollen and engorged" which is a straight lie. I sincerely doubt she has a license to even do that. What agency do we report people like that to?

Harry D, you say you are a farmer? LOL. The closest you ever came to being a farmer is when your cub scout leader bought you an ant farm to keep you quiet.

I would think so--even if you get the organic cows' milk, you're still drinking a product intended to grow a 90-pound calf into a 2,000-pound cow in about two years. If you're concerned about soy milk, you could use rice milk or nut milk or do a mixture of soy milk with another plant milk.

I do agree with you that milk isn't really a "natural" thing to drink, but by that logic it isn't "natural" to cook your food or eat anything processed either. I don't like how commercial dairy farms operate, but there is nothing wrong with keeping a milk cow of your own. Domesticated cows produce more milk than their calves can drink because people have bred them that way. As much I can't stand Harry D, what he says in this question is true. I've been to an organic dairy farm in Marin and those cows do line up and wait impatiently to get into the milking barn.
And I've never heard of a license being required to keep a dairy cow on your own property so I don't think you really have a case there.
@gal_D: I was answering her question as pertains to someone keeping a milk cow for their own personal use, not the dairy industry. She was accusing someone of mistreating a cow when that is not the case. I don't use dairy products myself, mostly for health reasons. Btw: I have a suspicion this Ashley person is a troll.

I have lived on a farm all of my life and i suspect you dont even know what a friggin cow looks like. Did you know that if you dont milk a cow it could die? It builds up and it will cause an infection, and eventaually it will die. And by the way, the only dairy product not made of cows milk is made of gaot milk, is that unnatural? This a stupid question.

I am vegetarian, not vegan, vegetarian. I don't eat eggs, which speaks for itself. But, I do drink milk. I never thought of it as being "unnatural". Obviously it's unnatural to slaughter an animal that was on this Earth before we were, but I also thought that it was okay to milk a cow. Obviously the cow has them for her calf's, but then why is it that cow's milk is prominent all over the world?
I still know where you are coming from, we have no right to take, to steal, a cow's milk. Just because it can't stand up for itself, does not mean we automatically have the right to do whatever we want to it. Which is basically what's wrong with the world's entire economy.
I'm sure it is wrong, and I do agree with you, in some ways. But, unless people start feeling the same way, nothing will change. Hunters, butchers, the ignorant and the rude towards living creatures will never side with you (shall I perhaps say us?) And, for that I feel even more pity for those types of people, for they will never have a heart for those that were here, that survived, that roamed before us. Animals know better then us, they live better lives then most of us, yet, we still slaughter them for fun, for food, for sport.
And with that, I feel ashamed to call myself human. Because most humans are so bold as to claim they are atop the food chain. And that, is nothing to be proud of.

Hiya, new robotic milking systems are being introduced that let the cow decide when it's ready to be milked, so the cow has a choice and must definitely have a need to alleviate the milk load, I'm sure these new farming techniques would not stand up if the cows hated it and declined?
Check the story yourself...

Ashley......I agree with you whole heartedly.....Milk is for the calf.........
However......milk is the only product which man obtains from an animal without harming the animal. In return man does look after the animal and the calf......It is in a way, a two way traffic.....
Then there is different kinds of milk....buffalo - goat etc.... In all the cases the animal will only give milk after it has given birth.....just like the human being.... That milk is for the new born....
So leave it alone....

in a perfect world cows would freely walk the earth with out been farmed for there milk meat etc ,and all other farm animals a like but unfortunately this is not a perfect world and if the farmers did not produce these animals i am sure that they would probabley be on the blink of extinction such as polar bears monkeys cheetahs etc are now .
I'm not a vegetarian but i here what you are sayn
its a harsh reality but my advice to you is to get on with your life and stop caring what everyone else is eating or drinkin because unless you can provide another life style for these animals what else can you do?

Ashley, please try attempting to be a little less obnoxious and conceited. You don't know everything and nor do I, but the bottom line is that if people shut up and listen from time to time then they tend to learn more. Thank you.
Like it or not, the majority of animals today are "slaves" to humans as humans have (over) populated this entire planet. Those animals that do remain are there because people tolerate their existance because they benefit them in some way: by being cute or majestic or useful or making good pets. This is what it's all about and there's not a lot you can do about it. Sorry.

A cow has to produce a calf before she can produce milk, just like humans the only difference is they kill the calf so humans can drink the milk.

cows, goats etc have been milked since the beginning of time. it is not cruel to milk a cow,its cruel to take its calf away. Ashley, please you really must learn how to present your argument in a true factually manner. at the moment you come across an extreme veggie nutter which puts people right off ,veggies and non-veggies.
