My favorite recipe is very simple.

Asparagus, olive oil, kosher salt and black pepper. Toss them all together and throw them in a screaming hot oven (450 or so). Or throw them on the grill. They won't take long - especially if you are using skinny stalks.

Enjoy!

Steam the asparagus. (You need a steamer for this.)
If you don't have a steamer, bring a pot of water up to a boil add salt.
Chuck the asparagus in and bring it back to a boil again. Depending on it's size (thickness) it can take anywhere between 30secs - 2 mins. Stand by with a fork if you want to make sure it stays crunchy and yummy. Check every 30secs or so. As soon as your fork can pierce it easily, immediately turn off the flame, drain and plunge into cold water.
Warm your vinegarette, add some salt and pepper. Toss your asparagus in it.
Alternatively, chop up garlic (or use garlice salt), heat up some olive oil, stir the garlic through till it's fragant (30secs), turn off heat and toss your asparagus in the pan.

Serve.

No spices at all??

The simplest asparagus recipe I have will convert even the most jaded vegetable hater.

1 bunch asparagus
3 TBS butter
3 TBS lemon juice (1/2 to 1 lemon, squeezed)
dash cinnamon (I guess you could skip this if you don't have any... but who doesn't have cinnamon?)

Wash the asparagus. Trim off the woody ends and discard. Cut off the tips and set aside.

Melt the butter and add the lemon juice and the cinnamon.

Place the stems in a colander and steam over a pot of boiling water for six to eight minutes. Then add the tips and steam another three to five minutes.

Remove the asparagus and place in a bowl. Add the lemon-butter mixture, and toss to coat.

MMMMMM, mmmmmm, GOOD!

Is this too simple?

Steam the asparagus. Pour melted butter on top. Season.

If you want it crispier, steam it for a shorter period.
