The system my doctors use adds in 20% of triglycerides, in addition to LDL and HDL.

LDL = 61
HDL = 46
Tri-G = 55, 20% of 55 = 11

Total = 61 + 46 + 11 = 118

no total cholesterol is just in itself cholesterol. HDL and LDL are lipoproteins (high density and low density) and are not your cholesterol, but rather a part of your lipid profile. they are counted seperately
