A STD is simply that - a sexually transmitted disease.

STDs can be contracted by sex (vaginal, anal, or oral) and some can be contracted by DIRECT skin to skin contact with an infected area. Some STDs can also be passed at birth if the mother has a STD. HIV can be passed by needle/syringe sharing with a HIV/AIDS infected person or a blood transfusion, as well as the ways mentioned above.

If a person is going to have sex there is ALWAYS a chance they can contract a STD (protected sex or not) if the person they are having sex with has a STD. Condoms HELP prevent the spread of STDs, but they are NOT 100% effective. The ONLY thing that is 100% effective in preventing a STD is abstinence. It doesn't matter how "clean" a person is, how many people they sleep with, age, race, sex, etc.

All is takes is ONE time to contract a STD. That is why it is so important to know your sexual health and your partners before you have sex or doing anything sexual.

You get STDs by having unprotected sex with people who have STDs. Just like you can't get colds from people who don't have them, you can't get an STD from people who don't have them. You can prevent them by having only one sexual partner at a time and using a condom. Also, almost any STD can be passed from mother to fetus during pregnancy or during delivery, and through contaminated blood. Some people are more prone to getting STDs because they are already sick or they sleep around a lot. Keeping it clean down there will not prevent you from getting an STD if you have unprotected sex, but it will prevent you from getting other nasty diseases like yeast and bladder infections, as well as keeping you from getting itchy or uncomfortable.
