I was listening to Dr Dean Edell this afternoon, and he was talking about a survey taken regarding vegans' sexual preferences. According to the survey, many vegans will not date or sleep with meat-eaters as they consider it disgusting and distasteful to even kiss a non-vegan. Some even refuse to associate with non-vegans. I find this an extreme point of view. I was curious to know how vegans here feel about this and why. I am sincerely interested in your opinions.

Thanks everyone for your input. I guess I can understand why a vegan would feel this way. It's much easier to have a relationship with someone who shares your values. I appreciate your honesty.

Thanks Connie for sending me to that article. It sounds like the exact study that Dr Dean was talking about. Very enlightening.

First you might want to read the research greenghost did and received best answer for on that same article ....... http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjuA.jOYHEQyjdvIZz_cYLTty6IX?qid=20070803014639AAeLttI&show=7#profile-info-8BVrvyhTaa ....... it goes into the bias and flaws of the article .. That being said as I Vegan I can only say that for " me " to be with someone on a regular basis ( not just omni friends or relatives ) but specifically someone you want to have a relationship with .. I would not be able to .. Since I believe eating meat is wrong , how do I look at my partner everyday and act like it is fine to me what they do ? I would be thinking of all the animals they killed ... and it could never work .. I know it does work for some people , so perhaps it is because I am older and more set in my ways ..

I think it is a little extreme to not want to associate with non-vegans. As for not wanting to date a non-vegan, I don't think that's extreme. Some vegans just feel that they want to be with someone who has the same values as them. A lot of people feel that way just with different things such as religion, how you feel about children, life in general, etc. I don't blame them for not wanting to kiss a non-vegan either because what if that person just had some meat and meat particles went in to their mouth? That sounds pretty disgusting if you're a vegan who never eats meat and then you have to taste it again through someone's mouth.

Wow. I have never heard of anyone taking such a strong point of view. I don't feel the need to only date vegans/vegetarians as long as the person I am dating respects and understands my choice not to eat meat.

Most of my friends are omnivores, however, I would not have a relationship with somebody who was not vegan. Animal rights and liberation are a huge part of my life - I couldn't share my life with someone who still ate meat or animal products.

i am not a vegan, but i think that is a little extreme...to not associate with someone just because of their food of choice is a little ridiculous. i have 2 vegan friends, and we go out to eat together and they never complain about me eating meat...they know it's my choice like i know being vegan is their choice, and yea we have debates and discussions about it frequently, but its the differences in life that make it so interesting

Hmmmm. That is quite extreme, but it is understandable. I've had relationships with meat eaters and when it comes to dining, our worlds are VERY different. I don't think I could have a serious relationship with a meat eater and I totally could not marry one. No way. I just couldn't stand to have meat in my house.
