I was recently diagnosed with herpes-2
I am scared, ashamed, upset, embarrassed. Could anyone give me any suggestions? Can this stay dormant for years? I am shocked that I have it.

Sorry to say but there is no cure for it, but it is treatable. Most of the time it will be dormant, but when your stress level gets high or you get sick or your imunne system gets low you may get out breaks. It is very contagious so if you have sex with anyone please wear a condom. You will have to tell any future partners you may have that you have herpes.
It has been around for so long and they have quite a few medications that help control it that it isn't as stigmatizing as it used to be and it is one of the most transferred STD's. Talk to your Gyno and get on medication as soon as possible to keep it under control as I have heard the outbreaks can be quite painful. Also I have heard that the amino acid L-Argine also helps with the outbreaks as does the drug Valtrex.
You might also want to talk to a therapist on how to deal with
and come to terms of having a long term illness. It may make life difficult at times, but don't let it become the end of your world.
Good Luck and I hope this helps

why shocked? anyone with an active sexual life runs that risk. in fact it is estimated that more than a third of the population has it and doesn't yet know it. So, from now on you insist that your partner(s) use a condom for their own protection or build a relationship with someone who already has herpes 2 as well. And if you have an active lesion, don't have sex period. It's not the end of the world. Oh, and ask your doctor about Valtrex.

Yes, it can stay dormant for years. I understand that you are upset, but honestly 3 of 5 people have it, so you are not alone. Please don't be ashamed. It is widespread and sneaky. But don't let it get you down. Just try to stay on top of your stress level, because that can agitate it. Also pay attention to your body- You are great for talking about it, most people don't, but need to. The difference between you and others is that they don't talk about it. It does NOT change who you are as a person.
