I never heard of that before, so I looked it up on the internet.

Apparently, some experimentation with lab rats shows that a diet high in soy may raise thyroxine levels. I don't think all the facts are in, and I have no idea if this is applicable to humans.

Some other information shows that babies who were given soy milk developed thyroid problems. But this is somewhat controversial because some critics say the babies were also low on iodine (which causes hypothyroidism); and the condition improved when iodine was added to their diets.

My wife is a Dietitian in a hospital, and I never heard of a precaution with soy products for people with thyroid problems or taking thyroid medication. It's her job to know what foods interact badly with certain diseases or medications and make sure the patient has an appropriate diet. We talk about work a lot, and I think she would have said something about that. I know , for example, that people on Coumadin aren't supposed to eat vegetables high in Vitamin K.

I'll ask her about it if I remember.

PS: I found more information online. I think it looks like the thyroid problems were caused by deficient iodine levels; not the soy products themselves. See the link below:

I did ask my wife, and she said she never heard of soy foods being a concern for people with thyroid problems.

The person who said "soy products should be avoided anyway" is expressing an opinion, not a fact. Some people have allergies to soy, but that doesn't mean it's bad for everybody. The thing about cruciferous vegetables changing thyroid function is also a bogus idea not based on scientific fact. The only time I ever heard of someone in a hospital being asked to not eat broccolli or cauliflower was because it might give them too much gas.
