About 99% of cervical cancer cases are caused by HPV.

However, developing cervical cancer is actually pretty rare. It's estimated that without proper screenings (like pap smears), only about 1% of women with HPV will actually go on to develop cervical cancer. Most of the time it can be caught early enough where it won't cause significant damage or even death.

This doesn't mean it shouldn't be taken lightly though! Cervical cancer still affects about 10,000 women in the US ALONE every single year. About 4,000 of those women will eventually die from it. So, it should be taken very seriously.

You should see your doctor, or better yet an OBGYN, and get a pap smear done. A pap smear can detect any abnormalities on the cervix which can be caused by HPV.

You also might want to look into get the new HPV vaccine called Gardasil. If a woman already has HPV it won't cure her of it, but it can possibly prevent her from contracting a kind of HPV she doesn't already have. The vaccine protects against 4 different kinds of HPV (two known to cause about 70% of cervical cancer and two known to cause about 90% of genital warts). Say, for example, a young girl only has one kind of HPV that the vaccine prevents. Theoretically, if she gets the vaccine, she'll be protected from contracting the other 3 kinds of HPV that the vaccine protects against.

The poor girl. Cervical cancer is horrible.

HPV is very common though, and most cervical cancer is easily treatable if caught early enough. Make an appontment and talk it through with a doctor. And make sure you go for regular smear tests. You'll be fine.

Just schedule an appointment with an OB/GYN and let her/him test you for it. Also be sure to get regular pap smears. You might look into that new shot you can get to prevent you from getting certain types of HPV.

It is so easy to get an STD, be careful, it's your body and you only get one. These viruses don't go away. And after you get one, you have to tell every other person you sleep with you have it. Can be really embarrassing. Good luck!!

if that is what caused her cancer then you could have contracted it from him if that is where she got the virus from. if you have any concerns see a doctor and be tested. also if he does have the virus he might have other viruses that he could have passed on to you. it is best to always practice safe sex. you are betting your life on it!
