Many athletes have larger than normal hearts. This is because the heart is a muscle, and a muscle exercised grows larger. If this is the reason there is no concern. However there are two kinds of cardio-myopathies, which are a concern. Hypertrophy and dilatation. In hypertrophy, the heart walls become thicker, the chamber volume may become smaller and the cardiac output may decrease. In dilatation, the walls become thinner and the heart becomes larger. But the muscle becomes weaker and may not pump out enough blood. Reasons are unclear. It can be hereditary. It can be caused by a Coxsakie virus infection, or other causes. It may be accompanied by cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heart beat). There may be no cure as is possible with heart attacks. Left Ventricular Assist devices are used in advanced conditions. Extreme cases may need a heart transplant. Take courage and have faith in the cardiologist. If detected early, a lot can be done. Medicines, changes in lifestyle and regular monitoring will be of immense help.

Enlarge heart known as cardimegaly may be due to no. of causes right from simple anemia to heart failure.Severity of condition depends on the cause. Enlargment imay be due to dilatation or hypertrophy of left ventricle as in hypertension which can be a chronic condition ,while dilatation like after heart attack & poor myocaridial muscles is more serious. First u have to find out the cause & the condtion of heart by investigations like 2 D echo & color doppler ,how much is the ejection fraction ( pumping of heart ) the diastolic dysfunction & systolic dysfunction presen or not . actually ther r so many points to consider . It is best to visit a cardiologist & get all investigations & have talk with doctor abt the possibilities .

An enlarged heart is serious and indicates heart disease. Your father needs to take care of himself, visit a good heart doctor on a regular basis, take his medicine regularly, and follow all the instructions his doctor gives him. Be sure your father does not smoke and be sure he eats properly. What you can do is help him out with heavy things like mowing the grass or whatever he may want to do that is heavy exercise. Go online and find out about heart disease and help him help himself. Encourage him to do the right things. If he takes very good care of himself, he should live a long productive life.

A lot depends on why it's enlarged, HOW enlarged, etc.
Some patients are candidates for heart transplants. Most others depend on a regimen of regular medical visits and multiple medications.
Can you die from it? The short answer is yes. However, MOST patients can live a reasonable life for many years.
Best of luck to your dad.
