All chocolate causes suffering to animals unless it's vegan and dairy free. The dairy industry is down right disgusting... I think it's worse than the meat industry. At least the cows just slaghtered after it's short miserable confined life. A dairy cow will be impregnated every year, have her one day old calfs taken away from her and sent to the veal industry to be fattened up and killed. She'll be pumped full of drugs, have to lug around her unnaturally large milk filled udders, and then a quarter of her way through her usual life expectancy, she'll be slaughtered anyway.

Maltesers may taste good but a lot of cows have had to suffer and die to make them.

This is the first time I ever was glad to be diabetic. I have never eaten these horrid confectioneries. Please do remmember that red colour dye is also not vegetarian approved.

No Mars chocolate brands produced from tomorrow onwards are vegetarian - This includes Galaxy, Mars, Bounty, Celebrations, Maltesers, Milky Way, Revels, Snickers, Topic and Twix.

“Due to a change in the ingredients used in our chocolate recipes from 1st May 2007 many of our products now contain whey. This is a by-product of the cheese making process and uses rennet derived from an animal source. Therefore we feel it is for individual vegetarians to judge whether they are comfortable in consuming cheese products that do not bear a vegetarian symbol; we would consider our products to fall into this same category.

Products that are currently in store or that you may have already purchased that carry a Best Before Date of 1st October or before are still suitable for your consumption, however if you have purchased any products with a best before after this date then we will be more than happy to refund the value of the product. Please see attached lists for further information.”

Masterfoods, the makers of Mars have abandoned their plans to use an animal derivative in their products after receiving thousands of complaints from upset vegetarians.

It had been stated that the products made by Masterfoods, including Mars Bars, Snickers, Twix, Bounty, Maltesers, Minstrels and Galaxy chocolate, would no longer be suitable for vegetarian consumption, after the company made a switch to a product containing traces of rennet.

The plans were later scrapped as Mars announced it became "very clear, very quickly" that a mistake had been made.

Malteasers look like little turds anyways. Perhaps you should try WHOPPERS (the American version of Maltesers)..they might be more veg friendly. Do maltesers have any gelatin in them? I dont understand why they wouldnt be veg friendly..that is really weird. Perhaps you should write to the company and complain.

I would check this because Mars announced that they were changing their whey suppliers to a European one and therefore couldnt guarentee veggie friendly whey (whey is derived form cows stomachs) However loads of vegetarians emailed their disgust with this announcement (me included) and Mars back tracked and are keeping their veggie friendly whey suppliers. So if they arent veggie then it is because of the whey but give it a couple of months and they should be. Mars was so shocked by veggie response that they actually want their products vegetarian society branded!
