dont you think it's time to stop being the laughing stock of the world? the first step would be to increase comprehensive sex education, make it mandatory, and make it in all schools.

C'mon people, be realistic here. I am a person with high morals and I tend to be more conservative. This issue however is a joke. You can't stick your head in the sand and hope that if you only teach your child abstinence then they will listen! It is human nature especially for teenagers to experiment. Don't you think we need to be teaching them to protect themselves if they chose not to be abstinent? I grew up in a strong Christian family. My father always taught me that I should wait until I'm married. He never said, if I did do anything to use a condom. I went against him as most young girls do and had sex. Guess what? I caught an STD! (it's gone now). I'm lucky I never got pregnant! I now have 1 son and 2 daughters. Of course I would like to say, DON'T HAVE SEX UNTIL YOU ARE MARRIED. How ignorant would I be if I didn't teach them why, and how to protect themselves if they chose not to listen. Our children need to be well educated. Tell them if they have sex they can get an STD, or worse, AIDS so they will protect themselves if they do it. Teach girls how hard it is to have a child out of wedlock at a young age. We can't just say, "Don't have sex, save yourself for your spouse." That's just the tip of the ice-burg.

No, it doesn't work.
I had to take sex ed when I was a freshman in high school. It was a requirement. They basically preached abstinence, which I thought was pretty stupid. Sure it's the only thing that is 100% effective in preventing STDs and pregnancy, but come on, most high school students are going to have sex. There's just no way around it. Not everyone waits till marriage.
By the time I had got to my senior year of high school only 1 out of 5 of my closest friends was still a virgin. The other 4 (including me) had already had sex and one had even gotten pregnant and dropped out her sophomore year. Since then she has had 4 kids and she's only 22.
I took a college class called "Human Sexuality" a few years ago. GREAT class! I would highly recommend it. It covered everything from homosexuality, to STDs, BDSM, pregnancy, etc.
High schools need to teach "the consequences of having sex" rather then "don't do it!". I just heard today on the radio that each year 3 million teenagers are contracting STDs and that it's estimated about 1 in 4 teenagers have at least one STD. Since MOST kids DO have sex by the time they graduate high school they need to know what can happen if they choose to have sex instead of scaring them and saying "don't do it!"

No that's just stupid. It's not education at all. People can't abstain for ever, the population must move forward, we need future generations. So basically they get out into the real world and don't know how to survive, don't know where to go if something does happen and potentially still believe old wives tales like "you can't get pregnant if you're standing up."
I think it does more harm than good. At least the kids these days can learn from the media and the internet i guess.

I agree with you, but we're a long way away from the truth being taught in schools..... about numerous subjects. We are living in a country where possible Presidential candidates have to be asked if they believe in Evolution. The sad part is that the majority does not. And then there's the whole stem cell research objection. Every other country is advancing much more than we are in subjects like math, science, and health, because this country is allowed to be run by morons.

i became taught intercourse coaching in south shore Massachusetts between the years of 'ninety 8 and '01 and that i might desire to tell you that we weren't in any respect taught abstinence. they could in specific circumstances point out the actuality that abstinence became the only thank you to proceed to be without undesirable little ones and illnesses yet they frequently taught us on the " all of us be conscious of which you have have been given already had intercourse or are making plans on it as quickly as achieveable so we can't waste some time with the abstinence concern" concept. in spite of that I remained a virgin till i became out of highschool.

I want to teach my children about sex education and not have some horny principle teaching my son how to masturbate. Sex education should be tought in the home. Why dose America want to be the laughing stock of the world? Why do they want there children to find all of the answers from the world, which is not a friendly place and not from the home, which should be a refuge from the world? The family is the backbone of society. Why are all of you trying to tear it apart?

The increased statistic of people with STI's supports the theory that abstinence only education hasn't worked.
Let's try sex education...we really don't have much to lose.

I agree . It only scares people. People should be taught safe sex ed. no one needs to be scared into being a virgin. I mean what if someone never marries? I say Teach Safe sex. And teach that its not cool to be a slut.
