usually when you go to a restaurant all you have is a menu and most of the time it doesn't have pictures of the food, so I just choose what I know, what I'm used to, nothing special. When there are pictures I go for color and food that at least fills the plate. When I get a chance I like to try spicy food (like some chinese food or spanish food, or hot wings, or something that has hot yellow peppers in it). Occasionally I like a sweet dessert.

The major thing that influences my food choice -- especially a new food -- is presentation -- that is if I can see the dishes beforehand. Or if I can visualize what the meal would like based on a great menu description.

My first impression is w/my eyes. Presentation says alot, but so does the surroundings. If a restaurant is filthy I won't eat. If it's not busy I don't bother. If I get bad service, I won't return.
As far as menu choice, I agree it depends on if I want comfort or to try something new. However, I do love to see examples, either by what someone else has ordered as it goes by, or by a pic in the menu or even samples when you come in as your waiting to be seated.

Lots of things! Sometimes it's how a food looks. Sometimes it's my friends. Sometimes it's the commercial I saw for a fast food place that has made me (and my easily changed mind) have a craving for a burger or a salad. Often, it's the smell. If it smells amazing, it's hard to think it's not going to taste amazing!

It's look ,or its presentation. On a menu, the items listed in the description of a dish (but only when the restaurant can be trusted).

Is it comfort food or something 'grown up'?
Is it ethnic?
Is it healthy?
Is it prepared by a cook by the numbers 'cook' with numbered packets or by a chef who knows his cuisine?
Look, smell, consistency. Is it spicy or mild?
I enjoy grown-up food, not food made for children.
