There is no test for men to detect HPV. So, it's basically impossible for a man to know if he has the virus or not. Since HPV rarely shows signs or symptoms, most men are unaware they have the virus and end up spreading it to their partner(s) unknowingly.
Have you heard of the new HPV vaccine called Gardasil? If not, you'll definitely want to read about it and might consider getting it. The vaccine protects against 4 different kinds of HPV (two known to cause about 70% of cervical cancer and two known to cause about 90% of genital warts).

Also, condoms are not 100% effective in preventing ANY STDs including HPV. Condoms definitely HELP prevent the spread of STDs, but the only thing that is 100% effective is abstinence.
Some STDs, like HPV and genital herpes, can be spread by DIRECT skin to skin contact with the infected area. So, even if the man is wearing a condom, it's only covering his penis and not his ENTIRE genital area. Just the rubbing back and forth of the genital skin during sex is enough to spread either one of these viruses, even if condoms are used.
Take care!

If, by clean, you mean not infected with HPV - then yes, you're not going to be infected if he is not sexually active with anybody else while you're together. However, it's a very common virus and if he hasn't had an HPV test, then you cannot know for sure if he is clean, unless he hasn't had sex with anybody else in his lifetime. If he is infected, then using condoms helps, but it does not completely reduce the risk. HPV is extremely contagious and you can get it from skin-on-skin contact, oral, and anal sex...so be careful. And he doesn't have to have an active infection (sores) for you to get the virus.

People who question why girls as young as the age of nine need to get this shot should realize that it's done that way as because girls who are younger are less likely to be sexually active. Telling them to wait until they are at around the upper age limit is unrealistic because most women by that age are already sexually active or have had sex. I found the part about HPV being the leading cause of throat cancer to be especially disturbing. Many people have this kind of sex as a way to prevent pregnancy or they wrongly believe it will protect them against a sexually transmitted disease. It doesn't.

If both you and your partner start out and continue to stay monogamous and start out free of STDs, by definition you won't pick any up except through bad blood transfusions or accidental bodily fluid transfers (such as during a bus accident when everyone is bloody and in a jumble). Condoms are only necessary for preventing pregnancy in this case. You can still get and pass yeast infections back and forth, so be aware of that.

There are several different strains of HPV. Using condoms is your best chances of not getting it. Some are more dangerous strains then others. While others have it their whole life and never know it.
