Online resources say that it's a myth that you can pick them up from public toilet seats or casual contact. The same resources say that they die without blood in 24 hours. If that's true, then why do you need to boil sheets and clothes? Why not just wash them in the laundry and leave them unused for a long while 'till they die?

No, it isn't true. The CDC has a good site on pubic lice at http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dpd/parasites/lice/factsht_pubic_lice.htm#treatment.

You can't pick them up from toilet seats or casual contact. You can, however, get them from bedding, towels, and upholstered furniture under certain circumstances.

Pubic lice may also infest eyelashes, beards, mustaches, and any coarsely-haired body part such as legs. They may also infest the scalp at the back of the neck and behind the ears. If this happens, the lice and eggs can be deposited on upholstery and infect the next person who comes into contact with it.

Yes, they may die without blood in 1-2 days. No, you don't need to boil sheets and clothes; merely wash them in hot water on the longest washer cycle and dry on the hottest dryer cycle for for 20 minutes. You may also want to vacuum the home thoroughly and dispose of the vacuum bag carefully.

that is right pubic lice only transmitted sexually, and the reason why u have to boil sheets it is for ur own personal hygiene, and to keep ur bed with minimum germs, as they come in contact to ur breath, to ur skin...to ur hair, so it is magical the fact that u can be disease free as long as u maintain ur personal hygiene maximum
