For some people who get a lot of outbreaks the expense of the medication is worth it. It will help heal their outbreaks and make them less severe.
I've been outbreak free for nearly 2 and 1/2 years (without taking medication). So, for me, the medication is pointless. I do have medication (acyclovir) on hand in case I do get an outbreak, but it's too expensive to take daily.
It really just depends on the person and their individual circumstances.

Although you can contract hsv whether you are showing symptoms or not, taking medication for me helped to shorten the time it took to get over the ob plus lessen the severity. I dont use it as suppression b/c I chose to let my body adapt to the virus and see how I'd react to having it. Thankfully, in the five years I've had it I've had very few outbreaks (not counting the first 6 months which were HORRIBLE!!!) But for some people who have ob's all the time it really does help. I think it's just up to each person to decide for themselves, every body is different.

Antiviral medications:
1. Lessen the severity of the outbreak.
2. Reduce the time it takes the outbreak to heal.
3. Decreases the number of outbreaks.
4. Decreases the number of days the virus is contagious.
The herpes virus may indeed be contagious when no symptoms are present; this is most common during the first year of the outbreak. Sometimes after the first year, the virus is not contagious when there are no symptoms.
There are many treatments out there for incurable diseases. The patient must make the decision regarding whether the treatment is worth his or her money.

I stopped taking my meds because I thought the same thing. But I started getting an outbreak every couple months and they were painful/uncomfortable so I started back on meds and now haven't had outbreak in about four months.
They do help although I hate having to spend the money.

Valtrex helps with the number of outbreaks. Some say it has been years since an outbreak.

Because it makes my boyfriend feel more secure as it reduces the chances that he will get it by about 70% (so they say). I don't get outbreaks, so I never bothered taking it before we started dating!
