All this depends on how often you get to Hawaii or New Orleans. This also depends on how close you are, geographically, to either place. Both a luau and Mardi Gras are cultural traditions and you can learn a lot from them. Just be sure you do before you start gettin' liquered up. LOL. One more thing, Mardi Gras happens the day before Ash Wednesday. A luau can happen anyday.
Hope this helps :)

Mardi Gras!!!! Luaus are really fun but are more common. Mardi Gras is definitely the way to go! Check out www.orientaltradingcompany.com for mardi gras party supplies. Good luck and have fun! By the way, do you know the home of the original (american) mardi gras is?

Luau's are becoming over done. I've done the decorations for 3 Mardi Gras Dances for a local club. They have the best time. I even have a purple, green and gold balloon drop at midnight. People come in elaborate masks and really get in the spirit. Party City and Oriental Trading have what is called scene setters. They are plastic backgrounds that you attach to the wall with poster stick um. They are quite inexpensive. Not knowing your budget, I'll suggest 2 sites that have quite elaborate decorations that are rather pricey. The last 2 sites have some really good ideas. You can find all kinds of recipes on line to develop your menu. Hope these inspire you.

Either one would be great. Being from Mobile, AL, the original home of Mardi Gras (betcha didn't know that!), I am a little biased toward that theme. I think it could be really fun.
Key things:
Tons of Beads
Plenty of Doubloons
Plastic Mardi Gras cups with your name, etc. printed on them to serve beverages in
Moonpies for dessert
Gold, Green, and Purple everywhere (be sure to do gold, not yellow, to keep it classy)
King/Queen crowns as decorations with a special one for you to wear
And I could prolly come up with tons more stuff but my brain is blocked right now. If you are interested, send me an e-mail and I can help you with more! Sounds fun!

Being that I'm a native New Orleanian...100% Mardi Gras! Mardi Gras beads, masks, king cake, bloody mary's, hurricanes(the drink), mini muffalettas, etc. That sounds like a great party!

Mardi Gras! I say that though because i have family who lived down there and tell me stories all the time. The beads and dressing up seems like so much fun!

proper, like all and sundry else has reported... bead are important! Snazzy jazz music would be super! and classic cajun style meals... crawfish, po'boys, beignets and chicory coffee! and remember approximately related to the Hurricanes! (beverages it is!) A Pat O'Briens New Orleans staple!!
