That sounds like a crash diet. You will lose weight temporarily but it will come right back at you with vengeance once you switch to your regular diet. You have to adjust your diet so it becomes not something you could do 2-3 months, but THROUGHOUT YOUR ENTIRE LIFE.
Because you're a vegetarian, you're getting much less fat than meat-eaters so you can relax about your diet. Eat whenver you feel like eating, just don't stuff yourself. The only thing you should watch for is cheese and eggs, so perhaps 1 egg + 1-2 slices of chese a day is enough.
Oh yeah, last point. Fasting is definitely a bad idea, nutritionally speaking. The only good thing about fasting is the "spiritual" quality it brings to one's life. :)

lacto-ovo vegetarian can be a good diet if you MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING YOUR PROTEIN, which is harder to get as a vegetarian.
As for eating only when you're hungry, that's a very bad idea. are you trying to lose weight? then this is the worst possible way to do it. Your metabolism will slow down, and your blood sugar will spike and then crash, leaving you drained. The best way to maintain and speed up your metabolism would be to exercise regularly, and break up your meals into 5 or 6 small ones throughout the day. if that's not possible just try to be more consistent about eating, eating only when you get hungry won't help in a good way.

It's a bit unhealthy since you just eat when your stomachs growls, you should eat at the right time to pacify one's hunger, if you do this usual way, will it might get you into trouble but if you live in healthy diets, you can savor anytime of the day you like as long as you will not suffer in the future.

If you train your body to realize that it only gets food when it is really, really hungry... it will begin to reduce your energy and store every calorie you ingest... Which means that if you ever wish to go back to a normal diet after this one for a long time... you will put more weight on...
Exercise and eat a nutritional lower calorie meal more often in the day... train your body to burn up what ever you put in it instead of storing it as fat. it works, I promise.

Some HIndus fast on a certain day of the week, especially if they are praying about something in particular. (My wife is Hindu, but she doesn't do that.)
I never heard of it causing any of them any harm.
If you eat only when you're really hungry, I guess that depends on what kind of schedule you have--it may not be possible for some people.

I say do what ever feels right for you.
Its good that you only eat when you are hungry to avoid over eating. Drinking lots of water through out the day will assist you feeling full and you will naturally eat less but if you exercise regularly and eat healthy, unprocessed foods when you are peckish then the weight should just drop off, if that's your goal.
