I have been a vegetarian for five years, and at first I had the same concern as you. I started eating tofu, and it is amazing. The taste is good, and it can be put into so many different recipes. Also, I tried eating more beans, but a lot of meals that have beans in them are also high in fat, so don't eat too much beans. Peanuts also have a good amount of protein, and there's never anything wrong with eating vegetables. I never took any protein shakes/supplements, but if you still feel like your not getting enough protein, then go ahead. You are making a great decision, so don't let this hold you back.

Haylee, have you ever heard of a case of protein deficiency in an industrialized nation? I'm guessing not. It's all but unheard of in the U.S.--although goodness knows we hear about heart disease, cancer, and diabetes all the time. The only way you can have a protein deficiency is 1) you don't eat enough food or 2) you eat too much junk food.

So eat a varied diet, enjoy what you eat, and you should be fine. I will warn you not to eat too many nuts, as they are high in fat.

Don't listen to anyone who says it's hard for vegetarians to get enough protein. Just about anything you can eat has @ least *some* protein in it, including fruit. Beans, tofu & whole grains are good sources of protein & if you eat dairy you'll also get lots of protein.
Whether you become vegan or lacto-ovo-vegetarian, just enjoy a wide variety of foods, focus on healthier items & you'll do fine.

It's easy to get enough protein by eating a variety of fruits, veggies, grains, and legumes (like peas, beans, and lentils).

These foods are especially high in protein: Almonds, black beans, brown rice, cashews, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), kidney beans, lentils, lima beans, peanut butter, pinto beans, seitan, soybeans, soymilk, sunflower seeds, tofu, and vegetarian meats (veg chicken, veggie burger, etc.)
