You could do a scavenger hunt type thing and whoever finds the most things on the list wins the "booze"... just a thought.

Work in reverse. First decide where you can put the chest full of booze. Will you bury it or just hide it? Oh come on now, bury it. What fun. Then you will have to look around the area for good places to hide clues. You will for sure need to really be where the party is to see where and how to make the clues. Unless you have been there before and remember all. Ya can say something like left five paces from the oak tree, and put a clue there. Gradually work your way towards the chest. What fun. Clues could be tied into a bandanna or in a small treasure chest. At the treasure chest site can have a sword for them to dig with. Go to a dollar store to see what they have, cheap.

A friend of mine had a Nifty and Thrifty party last year where you had to buy your outfit from the Salvation Army or other such thrift shops. There was no limits on how much you could spend or what you could buy but everyone got into the spirit. Some people went for the bag lady look, other like 70s rock stars, I think someone found some sorry old prom dress from the 60's and wore that. There was even an old wedding dress that got revamped into a hot little number (the seam was taken up to an unseemly height! haute de fashion). The bar was set up like a soup kitchen with punch being served from big pots with ladles. Good Luck and have a great party.

The buried treasure should be barried near the pond. Have everyone start at the tent/houe site and give them a clue to figure out where the next clue is. send them through the woods on various clues until they find the chest.
Serve Rum...don't pirates like rum =)

Ah matey, I have just the plan.
You take a yard to the left and a swagger to the right... before ye come to the x that marks the spot.
We be havin a bit of grog in our cup to start you off.
The pretty lassies with frills and rouge will fill yer cup with a tasty treat , to find them you'll have to go east.
It seems it would be msch easier if you start from the "treasure point" and work your way back.. for a chest of liquor, better make it hard.. what a treat indeed.
Just think of funny clever sayings that will get them on their way. sound like a blast.

Oriental Trading has a ton of Pirate stuff. The have carboard and little metal chests that you could use to hide your prizes in. The also have treasure maps for 4.95 (for 24) that you could use to write your clues on. I use their stuff in my classroom, just go to the website (orientaltrading.com).
