Anyone have experience with using electric fencing in bear country?

If you are in an area that has regulations on using 'bear containers' to store all your food and everything.. Does having an electric fence count? Because the whole point of 'bear containers' isnt to keep the bears from smelling it, its keeping them from getting the food and conditioning them to rely on humans as a resource... So, I could substitute all that bear container stuff with an electric fence right?

Electric fences actually work rather well but they are NOT to keep the bear from getting into your food there are to keep the bear out of your campsite. You MUST follow proper bear bagging or can rules and keep your food well away from your sleeping area for them to be of any use. I have used a fence on one trip on the AT and while pleased with it don't think it was worth the weight or trouble to bring again.

No. Actually you are the first one I ever heard of that even suggested it. How are you going to supply enough power to charge it? A gas generator? Anyway it's totally impractical. I hunt in Northern Canada and British Columbia for brown and black bear. An electric fence wouldn't even slow a bear down. The outfitters I hunt with all have hung our food from tree's in coolers and containers,. The secret is to use a medium weight chain in place of a rope that a bear can bite thru,. Using chain and a decent key type padlock with minimal space between the chain wrapped around the tree seems to work best. The bear can't bite thru the chain easily, and if he climbs up to try and swat it down, the chain will stop that from happening. I saw a bear rip into a king-cab GMC diesel truck and virtually destroy it to get a candy bar out of the console ash tray..So.. NO an electric fence won't work!

Not to mention, but have you noticed that not even zoo's rely on electric fences to keep their Bears in. You willing to risk your life on a portable electric fence? Pepper spray? Feel free, just make sure you have paid your life insurance premium. Common sense and personal experience tells me it's not worth of the risk. Besides, where will you get the electricity for the fence? A lot of batteries?
