hmm... well nicotine is a vascular restrictor - meaning that it restricts the vessels that deliver blood to the heart. The effects can last 45 minutes to an hour after he removes the tobacco also. I know it has other effects, long term, but the reason he is probably having a tough time now is because of circulation. Tell him to just quit.

I'd worry more about mouth or throat cancer. people have lost half their faces because of chewing tobacco. he's probably just out of shape and not used to cycling. he can't expect to pick up where he left off if he hasn't ridden in a while.

in 1 year, tobacco does the same thing to you as smoking it, does in 5-6 years. It is a lot worse than smoking. I don't find it surprising the his health has been affected. If he takes immature steps, he will pay for it.
