If you have a cold sore and you give someone else oral sex, there is a good chance you would give them genital herpes. In fact you can infect them when you do not have any symptoms - my boyfriend had no cold sore when he gave me oral sex and I caught genital herpes, though he did get regular cold sores.

The chance is much lower - highly unlikely - if they already suffer from cold sores themselves, as their oral infection will provide them with antibodies to prevent them getting the virus again genitally. Very rarely it can happen though, so it is such safer to avoid giving oral sex when you have a cold sore.

So, in this theoretical situation where you have given someone genital herpes by giving them oral sex when you have a cold sore, you want to know if you would them catch genital herpes yourself by having intercourse with them? Yes it is possible and I have seen several people on herpes discussion forums that this has happened to.

It probably wouldn't happen all in the same night - you might catch it if you had intercourse with them in the days following them catching the virus, once the virus had had time to develop in their genital region but before you both recognised symptoms and avoided contact.

As I said before, the fact that you have oral herpes (probably hsv1) should in most cases provide you with enough protection to stop you getting it genitally. One exception that sometimes happens is when your partner has just caught the same virus, genitally or orally. You see, when they have just caught the virus they are at the most infectious they will ever be, with very large quantities of the virus in their system, and this can overwhelm your immune defences enough for you to catch it in a second location on your own body, if you have contact with their new infection - say, if they have just caught genital herpes of the same type as your oral herpes, when they are very infectious having just caught it it could be transfered back to you on your genitals through intercourse.

Under most circumstances this wouldn't happen, but people are very infectious during their primary outbreak of herpes and I have heard of it happening a few times. However, I carried on having sex during my primary outbreak of genital herpes and didn't pass it back to my partner (who has cold sores/oral herpes) and I have accidentally had sex with him when I am infectious a few times and he hasn't caught it on his genitals, so though it is possible, it doesn't happen often.

As for once they have had the virus a while, it is highly unlikely you would catch it on your genitals from having sex with them if they have genital herpes of the same type as your oral herpes but no current symptoms. My boyfriend has oral hsv1, I have genital hsv1, but we have unprotected sex and don't worry about it.

Yes it can. A cold sore is the herpes virus, and it can be transmitted to the genitals. And vice versa. You can contract a cold sore from oral sex with someone with genital herpes. Not that you'll believe this, but I do not know this from personal experience. When I worked at the hospital, an Infectious Disease physician that I know used to rant and rave about this all the time. He says that 90% of the population has been exposed to the herpes virus in one form or another. However, as he stated, since Americans are "so nasty" there's no sense in testing the virus for specific strain (A or B, etc.) because they've been mixed from oral to genital over and over.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

I think you are asking "if I were to have oral sex, and I am the one with the cold sore, would that give me herpes?" If that is exactly what you are asking, the answer is that you already have Hepres, mostly likely Herpes type 1. If you have oral sex with someone, you may transmit it to them, wherever you have oral contact with them.

You can also infect your own genital area from your mouth cold sore by touching it and then touching your genitals without washing in between, if it is currently an active lesion.

Coming from someone who has the herpes simplex 1 virus its not that big of a deal. Its only contagious when it is a blister once it scabs over your fine. But when it is a blister you never want to touch it with your fingers because you can transfer the virus to your fingers especially if it is the first outbreak so be careful. As for me, It doesn't show up on my lip that often. I would say once every 4 years or so. Yes, it is quite possible from kissing you became infected. It doesn't matter that you only kissed one person! That person must have had the virus and didn't know it or maybe they did who knows. You can be intimate with a person just make sure you don't do it if you have the sore present and you will be fine. No worries!!! ~Aimers

Well, the last I checked cold sore's dont give head. But let's assume you're having oral sex with a guy or girl who has a cold sore, how about that? If so, then YES, you could get herpes from it.

Basically whether your mouth touches his/her cold sore, or you genitals, you can get herpes.

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?

But after a friend share this video everything has changed.
