My neighbor just called and invited me and my wife over for dinner for his wife's 30th birthday. They are cooking steaks and told us not to bring anything. Of course we are going to but we will not have any time to make anything once we get home from work. What is something nice we could pick up on the way home that would go along with steak. It isn't a big party, it will just be us so I don't think a veggie tray would work. Any ideas?

We can't take any alcohol because we both have children and we don't drink in front of them.

A bottle of wine is always perfect... and with steak, pick a red wine. A nice Pinot Noir or Cabernet.

Although a nice bottle of wine would work but that's not a choice. I would suggest taking maybe a nice sourdough bread with spread and when you get there it's a nice gesture that the wives can hang out while your outside with the guy cooking steaks. Or my favorite, cool whip with tropical fruit can or whatever fruit can. Or the night before make jello and bring cool whip. It's something nice for the kids as well. Be merry.

You could pick up some nice Beefsteak tomatoes and some Silver Queen corn. You can usually find the corn already packaged and cleaned in the grocery store. A big jug of ice tea or freshly made lemonade would be nice. How about picking up an unusual ready made salad at the store?

Instead of picking up why don't you make it. Try and make some spaghetti salad i have a real good recipe ok!
Get some pasta as you would make spagetti boil it and strain it under cold water when cooked, cut up some red bell peppers diced, add some cucumbers diced, add some tomatoes diced, add some celery diced, add parmesan cheese and a cup of italian dressing, also add some oregano a dash, mix together put in fridge for about 2 hours take out toss up and enjoy. This spagetti salad goes good with any meal that has to do with meat.

Red wine. Aregentinian Malbec or Pinot Noir. No more than $30 a bottle should take care of it.
Or flowers. Something yellow or white. Not red roses - the romantic message will make someone uncomfortable.
Or good beer. Micro-brew. Six or twelve pack. Something dark like an amber ale, but not as dark as a stout (too heavy to go with steak during the summer).

Odds are, they already have the meal basically planned, if they told you not to bring anything. So, bring something that will work with whatever they are going to serve. You can get one of those fruit bowls that practically all supermarkets have made up ahead of time. Or you could stop at a bakery and get some small cookies. That way, it compliments the meal, instead of taking away from their plan.

They probably have planned the dinner. You could take flowers which are always appreciated....or a bottle of sparkling cider as well...or since you have kids, some extra ice cream would be nice...even if they already have some.
You also could bring a big bouquet of birthday balloons that say happy Birthday to make it seem more special.

you can make this ahead of time. but it would be more on the dessert side. very, very easy and is yummy.
cherry salad
1 can cherry pie filling (can use reduced sugar kind)
1 can sweetened condensed milk (can use the non-fat kind)
1 tub cool whip thawed
1 can large cushed pineapple drained
1 can large pineapple chunks drained (i usually cut the chunks in half)
about 1/2 cup chopped nuts (more or less to your taste)
mix all together and store covered in refer. soooo good!
note: sorry, don't know the oz size of cool whip but it is not the smallest one nor the great big one..but the med size tub.
i have doubled the recipe to make a really large bowl for big familly get togethers.
