Well, what's you're reason? If it's animal rights, feel good about that and don't be ashamed! If they ask if you want a meat dish just say: No thank you. If they ask why, you may say, I've decided to obstain from eating meat for the time being. That's as complex as it needs to be. Now, you might be veggie forever. That's okay. That counts as the "time being". Anyway, good luck, hold your head up high!

It's going to be pretty obvious the first time you go to the dinner table and it's hamburger night, don't you think? And what about Thanksgiving? Here's what I would do. If you don't want to come right out and say you're a vegetarian, then just say that you've decided to "eat healthier". That's nice and generic, and hard to argue with. Once everyone is used to you eating salads and veggies, you can take the next step. Edit - I guess you don't have to worry about Thanksgiving. ;) The rest of my answer still stands, though.

announce it, but DON'T make a big deal out of it.

Don't try to convert them, don't try to give them speeches.

Just say "I started a new diet about four months ago, and I no longer eat meat... I find it's working for me and I really enjoy it"

something like that.

Make it simple.

call it a diet, not a lifestyle.

You actually dont have to say anything. Do you know that I live with meat eaters and I have cooked vegetarian food - they eat it, if meat is cooked I eat something else or just have vegetables - nobody bothers and nobody says anything.

You dont have to draw attention to yourself. You dont have to defend your eating habits or justify them. And when you go to their place bring food.

Let them know quietly and don't wait to announce it at some big family feast that is overflowing with meat.

why do you have to nnounce it. I don;t se the need to make a big deal about it. You eat whatever you choose. People (including me) just don;t get the decision, but it isn;t a big deal to anyone. We just like to bust chops. I wouldn;t worry about and certainly wouldn;t feel the need to announce it lieke you are having a baby
