Trying to eat less animal products after watching a horrifying documentary......but I'm also trying to loose weight. So is too much bad for you, like on a daily basis? Also, is all tofu created equal? I would like to try cooking it with veggies and also adding it to smoothies......never tried it though, any tips?

Tofu is great when cooked with vegetables and it tastes wonderful in smoothies.

A 3-ounce serving of tofu has about 50-80 calories. The actual amount varies from one brand or firmness level to the next, but I'd say that whatever type you choose, it is relatively low in calories. While it's possible to eat so much tofu that it makes you gain weight, you'd have to eat such a large quantity of it that you'd probably get sick of it before putting on many pounds.

You can bake, broil, barbecue, or saute the tofu, depending on the dish you're preparing. It's always a good idea to add plenty of vegetables to make the meal more filling and nutritious.

Tofu doesn't have to be cooked. It can be added to a smoothie for a delicious drink. Just put some soft/silken tofu in a blender with an assortment of fruit and liquefy it. If it's too thick, add some soy milk to thin it out.

Eating any reasonable amount of tofu on a daily basis should be fine. By "reasonable" I mean one or two servings at each meal, like up to 5 servings per day.

Not all tofu is created equal. There are varying firmnesses depending on what you want to do with it (soft for smoothies, firm for baking). Some tofu is organic, some is not. You can find tofu that has already been seasoned, or find it plain. You can also find tofu that has already been baked, or find it raw.

Just go to the store, buy some tofu and try it. I bet you'll like it.

Too much of anything can be fattening!

I have seen low-fat tofu (called Low-fu or something like that), but I usually buy the Whole Foods brand. If you grill or bake your tofu instead of frying, you should be okay.

You get the water-packed stuff for cooking with veggies, and the silken type for making smoothies. I know that Mori-Nu has low-cal varieties of its silken tofu.

No, you won't get fat even if you eat as much as you can. Because tofu is almost water. I mean it contain a lot of water in itself. But tofu has a little sugar and carbohydrate.

Tofu is like super lean. It comes in several different textures: 'silken' is often used in smoothies or dips, 'soft' is often used as in thicker dips or puddings, 'firm' is often used for tofu scrambles and other eggy recipes, and extra-firm can be cut up and used in soups or pasta. I'm sure too much is bad for you, just like too much of pretty much anything is bad for you. Make sure to drain well. When using firm or extra-firm, wrap in a towel, place in a strainer in the sink or over a bowl, and place a heavy object such as a large can of tomatoes or bag of flour on top. Drain about 30 minutes.
