Okay there are so many possibilities, but one of the easiest it a potluck.
But if you feel more comfortable just doing food yourself here are some ideas.

The regular hamburgers and hotdogs.
But to spice it up, go all out on condiments.
For the burgers have at lease three kinds of cheese, have fresh tomatoes and avocados have bacon and of course ketchup relish and mustard.
for the hotdogs have chili and cheese.
have big juicy slices of watermelon (seedless is best)
have coolers of soda's and waters.
have small tables set out with paper lanterns hanging around the lawn.
get out the footballs and frisbee's and start playing.
have fruity popsicles and ice cream bars (when people are ready so they don't melt)

those are all farely cheap and you can generally get your fillings.

i have also once had a mexican feista (sounds corny but is actually quite good)
get at least 8 bags of flour tortillas
get some chicken and grill it
refried beans and cheese
mexican rice (ricearoni works pretty well)
salsa, queso and chips
and your ready to go.

just always keep the party going and make sure that everyone is having a good time.
also remember its always better to get more then less so if you are unsure about an amount get more then you think you would need.

My husband and I host bbq's for our friends and family alot. What we do to keep the cost down is we supply the main course such as: hamburgers and hotdogs or chicken. Then we ask all of our guests to bring a side dish. Have them bring the usual summer dishes. Baked beans, potato salad, macarroni salad, watermelon, deviled eggs, fruit salad, chip and dips, fruit platter, veggie platter, or anything else you can come up with. Hope this helps and you have a great bbq!

Broccoli Salad With Bacon

4 heads of broccoli
2 onions - purple or Vidalia
4 lb of bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 cup shredded cheese

Dressing:

3 c. Miracle Whip
1 c. white sugar
16 tblsp. vinegar

Mix dressing and pour over salad.

Mushroom Meatballs (Make ahead. Warm before serving.)

6 lbs. ground beef
8 eggs, slightly beaten
2-2/3 c. grated parmesan cheese
2 tsp. oregano
2 tsp. parsley
1 tsp. thyme
pepper to taste
4 cans Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup
4 can sliced mushrooms with liquid
5-1/4 c. half and half
4 heaping tblsp. sour cream
mashed potatoes or rice

Mix the ground beef, eggs, cheese and seasonings and shape into 1-1/2 inch meatballs. In a large skillet, brown the meatballs slowly on all sides in a little hot oil. Stir frequently. Cook for 15-20 minutes. Drain off excess fat, leaving a little in the pan. Pour the soup into the skillet with the meatballs, adding 1-2 can of water. Stir well. Add the half and half and the sour cream slowly, stirring to blend. Simmer on low heat uncovered for about 20 minutes. Add mushrooms with liquid and cook for 5 minutes. Serve over mashed potatoes or rice with your favorite vegetable, crusty bread and butter, and a fruit gelatin for dessert. Serve with finger rolls.

Make appetizers and finger foods.. Like mini swedish meatballs in bbq sauce, that can be kept warm in a crock pot.. Chicken salad on mini bread rounds,(cut bread w/ a bisquit cutter and spread with chicken salad homemade or store bough..) spinach dip w/ pumpernickel bread, cheese/crackers, vegatable tray with Ranch dip... Pinwheels.. tortillas stuffed w/ lunchmeat/cheese and Ranch dressing rolled/cut into rounds.. mini pizza bites.. mini muffin tins with bisquit dough for crusts and filled with pizza sauce and precooked sausage/onions/peppers diced very small.... and baked. Look at your local wholesale club for already prepared items as well.... Chicken wings, dim sum, mozzarella sticks etc...

Try freezing fruit like watermelon, grapes, honey dew and strawberries...crackers and cheese with summer sausage is always good and a veggie tray...top it off with a nice sparkling water and add lemon, lime, oranges, or cherries for flavor...
