Uh, it's so the absorption of the liquor we are consuming into our blood stream is slowed down just a wee bit so we can have fun and not fall down drunk so stinking soon.

I have been to many a party without food. Actually, probably the 80% of the parties I have been to over the past decade have not included food. But I can recall grabbing fast food to eat almost everytime either during or after a party. Food is a great thing to have at a party because it satisfies cravings while drinking and keeps people at the party longer. It also helps absorb alcohol so people don't get completely wasted.

You can have a party w/o food but, it depends on the type of party... If it's just friends getting together watching tv or a movie it's ok to not have food but, better if you do.. If it's a reception or special event I would say have food... I went to the lamest wedding reception a few yrs. ago it was in the basement of a church and there was no food, just cookies and soda... I wanted to take my gift back...There was also a stereo with a disc changer that was the "entertainment".. I can tell you the marriage didnt' last very long !

Food is needed for 2 reasons one is it is a social function and eating is always a universally shared experience - the second is if you are serving alcohol it will slow the rate of absorption making the time more enjoyable.

Food brings people together..it's social..just like having a few drinks is social. Personally..I thinks it's socially inept not to have some sort of food when entertaining.

Make sure you tell your guests that...

I just went to a party w/o food and let me tell ya...not many people stayed long. In fact a group of us left early just to go eat....

Have someone else host the party!

First, it's a tradition. Second, if there is alcohol involved food helps curb people's aggression.
